What’s coming soon to NextUp in January 2020?
David Farnor | On 13, Jan 2020
There are no chances of January blues with NextUp, which has a month stuffed with stand-up comedy to begin the new year.
The subscription video-on-demand platform specialising exclusively in stand-up comedy specials champions the most exciting names in stand-up comedy, filming and showcasing their work worldwide. Comedians among its catalogue include Max & Ivan, Jordan Brookes, Tiff Stevenson, Jonathan Pie, Hal Cruttenden, Paul Sinha, Bill Hicks, Bec Hill, Lou Sanders, Eleanor Morton, Tommy Tiernan, Stuart Laws, Simon Munnery, Daliso Chaponda, Tiernan Douieb, Tom Ward and many more.
This January, Ashley Hayden, Njambi McGrath, Lou Conran and Alexander Bennett are on the bill.
NextUp co-founder Sarah Henley says: “None of these new acts mince their words or shy away from controversial topics and we’re really chuffed to be adding them to the catalogue to kick off the year. We’re also sharing our second seasonal trailer to follow our autumn releases. Lots more to come for us this year; watch this space!”
Here’s the line-up of new NextUp releases in January 2020:
Casual Violence – 2nd January
In celebration of their ten year anniversary, multi award-winning sketch comedy troupe Casual Violence present “Hang the Suits”, a double bill special celebrating some of the best sketches from their impressive back catalogue. Expect menacing Remembrance Day poppy volunteers, maudlin museum curators, vicious ventriloquists, nasty narrators, songs about socks, and the long awaited return of Mr Pret A Manger from the stars of BBC Radio 4’s Sketchorama and hit podcast sitcom Hector Vs The Future.
Ashley Hayden – 8th January
Anti-vaccinators, the royal family and politics both home and abroad fall foul of Ashley Hayden’s viciously cutting humour in F**k You And F**k Your Beliefs.
Njambi McGrath – 13th January
A whistle-stop tour of African history, Njambi McGrath’s Accidental Coconut explores the juxtaposition of people mourning from the loss of former glory and those mourning how that former glory impacted on their lives ripping apart their innocence. In a time when the British public are re-examining who they are, it is poignant to see comedy that tackles the story and experience of coming from the other side of the empire.
Lou Conran – 17th January
At Least I’m Not Dog Poo Darren, declares Lou Conran, who returns with a thoughtfully funny show about presumption, misunderstandings and misgivings (and – as you might have guessed from the name – a man called Darren).
Alexander Bennett – 22nd January
Award winning comedian Alexander Bennett returns with Housewives Favourite, a passionately delivered hour of dark, observational comedy in which he reassesses all of his relationships following an escape from an abusive partner.
NextUp costs £4.99 a month with a seven-day free trial. It is available on iOS, Android, web, Fire TV, Apple TV, Chromecast, Airplay, Roku and Amazon Channels.
