Every month, we bring you a sneak peek at the best films and TV shows coming soon to Netflix UK. July is a month when people like to go outside. And, if they’re inside, they’re watching the World Cup or Wimbledon. But Netflix is doing its best to keep people sitting on their sofas with a line-up of future releases that spans a lot of genres, from gripping crime TV to, yes, even sport.
Here’s what’s coming soon to Netflix UK in July 2014:
Carrie – Tuesday 1st July
Kimberly Peirce’s remake of Brian De Palma’s seminal horror film sees the eponymous misfit teen pushed to breaking point by classmates who bully her at high school prom. Chloë Grace Moretz stars as the supernaturally-powered girl, supported by Julianne Moore as her mother.
Le Weekend – Tuesday 1st July
Netflix isn’t afraid to court more mature subscribers – and Le Weekend proves it. Notting Hill’s Roger Michell takes a turn for the prickly with this tale of an elderly couple celebrating their wedding anniversary with 48 hours in Paris. Lindsay Duncan and Jim Broadbent play the awkward pair, accompanied by Jeff Goldblum being, well, Jeff Goldblum.
Getting On Season 1 and 2 – Wednesday 2nd July
Added one day early – now available!
A sitcom set in a geriatric ward, this British show stars Jo Brand and Joanna Scanlan. It features the jokes you might expect, beefed up by satire of the NHS that won it a lot of acclaim from critics. Also, interestingly, several episodes over the two series were directed by none other than Peter Capaldi.
Skins Season 7 – Wednesday 2nd July
Skins recently returned to Netflix after a brief period away – and now Netflix are going one step further by adding Season 7. Great news for fans of the show.
Top Boy Season 2 – Wednesday 2nd July
Netflix continues to bump up its terrestrial TV content by adding to the first season of Top Boy – again recently returned to the site. Set on a fictional Hackney housing estate, the gritty drama follows the rise of Dushane through the drug dealing ranks – but what happens next if he becomes Top Boy?
The Shield Season 1 to 7 – Wednesday 2nd July
Before Breaking Bad, there was The Shield. Overlooked by many in the UK thanks to its debut on Channel 5, the cop thriller stars Michael Chiklis as an anti-hero on a journey of corruption to rival Walter White. He even has no hair to match.
The A-Team Season 1 to 5 – Wednesday 2nd July
Added one day early – now available!
“In 1972, a crack commando unit was sent to prison by a military court for a crime they didn’t commit…” If you know the end of that opening narration, the chances are you know what to expect from The A-Team. Starring George Peppard and Robert Vaughn, this seminal 1980s action series is an undeniable classic. We love it when a streaming plan comes together.
The Only Way is Essex Season 8 to 10 – Wednesday 2nd July
More of the same from TOWIE – and regular viewers won’t be disappointed by that.
Hemlock Grove Season 2 – Friday 11th July
Eli Roth may no longer be showrunner, but Season 2 of Hemlock Grove looks to be just as mad as the first, with monsters causing bloody mayhem in a quiet Pennsylvanian town. Cast members Famke Janssen, Bill Skarsgård. and Dougray Scott return.
The Battered Bastards of Baseball – Friday 11th July
Did you know Kurt Russell’s dad was the head of a baseball team? Neither did we. Following the underdog troupe made up of rejects, tearaways and part-timers, the documentary is set to be full of the underdog charm that has tempted sports fans away from VOD all summer.
