Apple TV+ brings back both Acapulco and Ghostwriter this month, but it’s all about the new premieres, from Charlie Hunnam-starring thriller Shantaram to the star-studded drama Raymond and Ray – plus a new documentary about Louis Armstrong fresh from the Toronto International Film Festival.
Here’s what’s coming soon to Apple TV+ UK in October 2022:
Shantaram: Season 1 – 14th October
Co-created, written and executive produced by Steve Lightfoot, who also serves as showrunner, the series is based on the bestselling novel by Gregory David Roberts. It follows a fugitive named Lin Ford looking to get lost in vibrant and chaotic 1980s Bombay. Alone in an unfamiliar city, Lin struggles to avoid the trouble he’s running from in this new place. After falling for an enigmatic and intriguing woman named Karla, Lin must choose between freedom or love and the complications that come with it. The series stars Charlie Hunnam (Sons of Anarchy) and Shubham Saraf. Episodes 1 to 3 arrive together, followed by episodes weekly for nine weeks.
Acapulco: Season 2 – 21st October
A journey back to the 80s through the memories of Máximo (Eugenio Derbez), the series tells the story of twenty-something Máximo Gallardo (Enrique Arrizon), whose dream comes true when he gets the job of a lifetime as a cabana boy at the hottest resort in Acapulco. He soon realises the job is far more complicated than he ever imagined and in order to succeed, he must learn to navigate a demanding clientele, a mercurial mentor, and a complicated home life, without losing his way to shortcuts or temptations. Episode 1 and 2 arrive together, followed by eight episodes weekly.
Ghostwriter: Season 3 – 21st October
A reimagining of the 1992 hit series from Sesame Workshop, the modern-day series maintains a city-based, multicultural cast, inviting children aged 6 to 11 to see themselves on screen as they learn to appreciate a range of new and classic literature. In its second season, the series’ young heroes work to save their bookstore and discover the true identity of the Ghostwriter while introducing audiences to fresh tales like “Malia and the Magic Paintbrush” and “The Cobalt Mask,” and familiar literary characters including Dr. Watson of “Sherlock Holmes” fame. All episodes arrive at once.
Raymond and Ray – 21st October
Raymond and Ray follows half-brothers Raymond (played by Ewan McGregor) and Ray (played by Ethan Hawke) who have lived in the shadow of a terrible father. Somehow, they still each have a sense of humour, and his funeral is a chance for them to reinvent themselves. There’s anger, there’s pain, there’s folly, there might be love, and there’s definitely grave-digging. Directed by Rodrigo García (In Treatment, Albert Nobbs).
Louis Armstrong’s Black & Blues – 28th October
Louis Armstrong’s Black & Blues offers an intimate and revealing look at the world-changing musician, presented through a lens of archival footage and never-before-heard home recordings and personal conversations. This definitive documentary, directed by Sacha Jenkins, honours Armstrong’s legacy as a founding father of jazz, one of the first internationally known and beloved stars, and a cultural ambassador of the United States. The film shows how Armstrong’s own life spans the shift from the Civil War to the Civil Rights movement, and how he became a lightning rod figure in that turbulent era.
