Luke Cage showrunner Cheo Hodari Coker has inked a overall deal with Amazon Studios.
Coker impressed hugely with his take on Marvel’s impervious superhero on Netflix, but Luke Cage fans were surprised to see the show cancelled by Netflix in October, as the streaming giant appears to part ways with Marvel and the shared universe they assembled together. The writing team behind the show were equally caught off guard, with five scripts reportedly delivered for a third season, before it was shut down.
Coker, though, has had no trouble finding a new home, signing an agreement with Amazon Studios. Coker and his Fighting 99th Entertainment shingle will develop and produce new series for Amazon Prime Video for what Deadline reports is a three-year period.
“Amazon is the future, and their bespoke, specific approach to building groundbreaking shows offers an amazing opportunity, one that I’m incredibly thankful for,” the Notorious scribe said in a statement. “I can’t think of a better place to launch the first shows developed under my Seattle-based Fighting 99th Entertainment banner, and am excited for people to see what we have in store.”
“We’re very excited to welcome Cheo to the Amazon Studios family,” added Vernon Sanders, co-head of Television at Amazon Studios. “From Notorious to Luke Cage, Cheo is a provocative, revolutionary storyteller, and we’re happy he’ll be creating those kinds of bold new series exclusively for Prime Video.”
