What’s coming soon to Sky and NOW TV in June 2017?
David Farnor | On 29, May 2017
Summer is normally a quite time of year for TV, but someone clearly hasn’t told Sky that, with Twin Peaks continuing to air through June every week and two new HBO movies (starring Robert De Niro and Oprah Winfrey) also on the way. Leading the pack, though, is Sky Atlantic’s new drama, Riviera, which stars Julia Stiles and is released all-at-once on-demand. Still need something to binge-watch? Sky is also bringing back box sets of The Night Of and The Leftovers – an opportune chance to catch up on Damon Lindelof’s series, as Season 3 of The Leftovers won’t arrive until July.
For Sky Cinema customers, June is similarly stuffed, with Jack Reacher’s return, the premiere of last year’s Cannes opener, Cafe Society, Pedro Almodovar’s Julieta, Queen of Katwe and Bridget Jones’ third outing.
Here’s what’s coming soon to Sky in June 2017:
TV
The Wizard of Lies – 1st June (Sky Atlantic)
Robert De Niro and Michelle Pfeiffer star in Barry Levinson’s feature- length drama from HBO revolving around the man behind perhaps the largest case of financial fraud in US history. De Niro stars as Bernie Madoff – stockbroker, investment advisor, financier, and originator of a 2008 Ponzi scheme that would lead countless people and institutions to financial ruin, and his own family to destruction. Pfeiffer plays Madoff’s longtime spouse, Ruth, catapulted into the unforgiving media spotlight due to her unwitting participation in her husband’s ploy.
Twin Peaks – Mondays/Tuesdays (Sky Atlantic)
The return of David Lynch’s iconic series continues this June, with new episodes simulcast and available on-demand every Monday at the same as their US debut, before being repeated on Sky Atlantic at 9pm every Tuesday. Episode 5 lands on 5th June, Episode 6 on 12th June, and so on. The first four episodes are already available on-demand.
Shots Fired – 4th June (FOX UK, 9pm)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K6s3yGfB1iM
Shots Fired examines the dangerous aftermath of two racially charged shootings in a small Southern town, providing an explosive autopsy of our criminal justice system. Urgently topical, the 10-part series is created by Gina Prince-Bythewood (Beyond the Lights) and her husband, Reggie Rock Byhewood, and stars Sanaa Lathan, Helen Hunt and Richard Dreyfuss. Episodes are shown at 9pm on Sundays and repeated at 9pm on Wednesdays, with each instalment available on-demand for 30 days after their initial broadcast.
The Late Late Show with James Corden – 7th June to 9th June (Sky 1, 10pm)
The talk show host heads back to the UK, bringing his smash-hit US show with him, as James Corden embarks on his first international adventure with the Emmy award-winning The Late Late Show.
The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks – 8th June (9pm, Sky Atlantic)
Oprah Winfrey, in her first feature-length role since 2014’s Selma, gives a powerful performance in HBO’s adaptation of Rebecca Skloot’s bestselling book of the same name. This is the story of a poor African-American tobacco farmer whose cancerous cells, taken without her knowledge in 1951, became one of the most important tools in medicine. And yet her name is still virtually unknown, and her descendants cannot even afford health insurance to benefit from the changes to healthcare she brought. Winfrey stars as Lacks’ daughter, Deborah, who with the help of Skloot (played by Rose Byrne) tells her mother’s story through her own heart breaking search for the truth behind the unauthorised harvesting of her cells, and discovers how they went on to change countless lives and the face of medical history forever.
Isle of Wight Festival 2017 – 9th June (Sky Arts)
Live and available in Ultra HD with Sky Q, Sky Arts presents the very best of this year’s star-studded Isle of Wight Festival. Grammy Award-winning rock band Arcade Fire, legendary singer-songwriter Rod Stewart and acclaimed French DJ David Guetta headline the event at Seaclose Park, with the TV coverage presented by Edith Bowman, Maya Jama and Kaiser Chiefs frontman Ricky Wilson. Also available not in Ultra HD on regular Sky and NOW.
The Putin Interviews – 13th June (2am, Sky Atlantic)
Oscar–winning director and screenwriter Oliver Stone has over the past two years been granted unprecedented access to both the professional and personal worlds of the Russian president Vladimir Putin. Simulcast in four parts from Tuesday 13th June to Friday 16th June, the resulting interviews are broadcast on Sky Atlantic at 2am – and available to stream afterwards on demand.
Riviera: Season 1 – 15th June (9pm, Sky Atlantic)
Neil Jordan’s new show is part family drama, part high-octane crime series, set against the awe-inspiring backdrop of France’s Côte d’Azur. With the first two episodes co-written by Booker Prize-winning author John Banville (The Sea), it stars Julia Stiles as Georgina Clios, the smart and resourceful second wife of Constantine Clios, who dies in mysterious circumstances in a yacht explosion. Georgina slowly begins a journey from light to dark as she discovers how little she knew about the man she loved and the world he lived in. All episodes are released at once on 15th June.
The Leftovers: Season 1 and 2 (Box Set) – 1st June
Based on the bestselling novel by Tom Perrotta, this mysterious drama from the co-creator of Lost centres on the small town of Mapleton, New York, three years after 140 million people – 2 per cent of the world’s population – disappeared without a trace. Those left behind attempt to get on with their lives in a world that has inexplicably changed forever, but as conflict in the town escalates, many have their own personal traumas to address. Starring Justin Theroux, Christopher Eccleston and Liv Tyler, this is one of the best TV shows of the last decade.
Ballers: Seasons 1 and 2 (Box Set) – 5th June
Dwayne Johnson has to hustle for the muscle in HBO’s hit comedy-drama as he plays Spencer Strasmore, a retired NFL player turned financial manager whose job is to help Miami’s hottest American football talents handle their considerable finances. But he soon finds out that it’s more difficult than it sounds as his clients devise increasingly creative ways to empty their wallets.
Billions: Seasons 1 and 2 (Box Set) – 9th June
Hot on the heels of the Season 2 finale, both seasons of Showtime’s financial drama are made full box sets on Sky, so that there’s no excuse to miss Damian Lewis (as hedge fund kingpin Bobby ‘Axe’ Axelrod) going up against Paul Giamatti’s US attorney.
The Night Of (Box Set) – Date TBC
If you missed HBO’s crime drama last year, don’t pass up the opportunity to binge-watch the whole thing on Sky Box Sets and NOW again this June, as Riz Ahmed, Amara Karan and John Turturro star in a murder case that spirals into a study of police investigation, legal proceedings and the turning cogs of the justice system. Gripping.
Movies
Jack Reacher: Never Go Back – 2nd June
Tom Cruise returns as Lee Child’s roaming vigilante in a story that sees Jack dragged into a military conspiracy with a new-found ally (Cobie Smulders).
Girls Lost – 7th June
“I think I like him so much because he doesn’t know who he is either.” That’s Kim (Tuva Jagell) in Girls Lost. She seems, perhaps, like your typical teen, hanging out with her friends, Bella (Wilma Holmén) and Momo (Louise Nyvall), bullied by classmates and generally feeling like an awkward outsider. But this is far from your typical coming-of-age drama…
Rock Dog – 16th June
Premiering on Sky Cinema on the same day as it’s out in cinemas, this animated outing follows a wide-eyed Tibetan Mastiff, who leaves home to fulfil his dream of becoming a musician, after a radio falls from the sky.
War Dogs – 17th June
Directed by Todd Phillips, War Dogs is the story of David Packouz, a 20-something slacker who just needs direction. That direction comes in the form of sewer-mouthed, drug-hounding, automatic-weapon-toting best friend, Efraim Diveroli, with whom he sets up an arms-dealing company and begins winning contracts from the US Government. A shocking, funny tale based on an unbelievable true story.
Cafe Society – 18th June
Woody Allen’s 2016 Cannes opener, Café Society, is a wistful love story about a boy and girl who should be together but never will be. Kristen Stewart is sensational.
The Childhood of a Leader – 20th June
Loosely based on a short story by Jean-Paul Sartre, Brady Corbet’s slow-burn psychodrama chronicles the early years of a future sociopath.
Julieta – 21st June
Emma Suarez and Adriana Ugarte deliver powerful performances in Pedro Almodovar’s compelling, emotional mystery.
Bridget Jones’ Baby – 23rd June
12 years after the disappointing sequel, this fun third outing for Renee Zellweger’s heroine brings Bridget away from the Edge of Reason.
Queen of Katwe – 25th June
A chess movie starring David Oyelowo and Lupita Nyong’o with a moving maternal bond at its centre? Checkmate.
The Purge: Election Year – 30th June
The presidential election is fast approaching and anti-Purge candidate Charlie Roan (Elizabeth Mitchell) is gathering some serious momentum. She and her supporters see the barbaric annual event for what it is – a tool for the deeply corrupt NFFA (New Founding Fathers of America) to solidify their position of power and line their pockets at the expense of the poor.
