The Leftovers Season 3 gets July UK air date

The Leftovers Season 3 will premiere on UK TV this July, Sky Atlantic has confirmed.
The show, created by Damon Lindelof and Tom Perrotta, is based on Perrotta’s novel, and explores what happens following the sudden departure one day of 2 per cent of the world’s population. At the heart of the chaos, grief and religious doubt are the Garveys, a family trying to come to terms with what’s happened, led by Justin Theroux’s baffled cop, Kevin.
While its weighty subject matter has never been a mainstream hit to rival Game of Thrones, HBO’s series has built up a strong, loyal following in both the USA and UK. With the third season set to be the show’s last, anticipation has never been higher for the series’ return. That in itself appears to have taken Sky by surprise, with fans clamouring on social media to find out when the show will air in the UK, given that it started in the US in April.
Now, though, viewers finally have an answer of when they can watch The Leftovers Season 3 in the UK: it will be released on Sky on 4th July. While that’s a but if a wait, there is some consolation in the fact that Sky will be releasing it all-at-once as a box set, so those wanting to race to the end of the series can do so immediately. Don’t have Sky? You can also stream it legally on NOW, as part of £7.99 monthly subscription, one that also includes (at the time of writing) all of Twin Peaks and Game of Thrones, which means there are still things to fill up the long evenings until The Leftovers returns.
The third season will take place several years after the events of Season 2, with HBO releasing this official description for Episode 1: “Three years after Miracle, Texas was overrun by the Guilty Remnant, Kevin Garvey (Justin Theroux) has returned to his role as chief of police. Although he seems to have moved past the incredible events surrounding his “resurrection,” the Seventh Anniversary of the Sudden Departure is just two weeks away and many believe another apocalyptic event may come with it.”

The Leftovers Season 3 will air in the US this April
26th January 2017
The Leftovers is returning for its third and final season this April, HBO has confirmed.
Viewers were equally bewildered by the first season, which, in true Lindelofian style, raised more questions than it answered, but Season 2 saw that mix of philosophy, pain and perfect performances soar to new heights, moving the action to a brand new location and introducing a bunch of promising new characters. Fortunately, that wasn’t the end, because the end is now near – and HBO has released a snazzy, stylish, cheekily silly and downright ominous teaser to confirm it.
Theroux, meanwhile, posted on Instagram the show’s air date: Season 3 of The Leftovers will premiere in the US on 16th April, which means you can expect episodes shortly after then on Sky Atlantic in the UK. We’ll confirm that when we have official word from Sky, but until then, enjoy this video reminding us just how atmospheric The Leftovers can be. The fact that Season 3 is expected, much like Season 2, to up sticks and move the action to Australia only makes it all more intriguing.

HBO renews The Leftovers for third and final season
11th December 2016
The Leftovers will return for a third season, HBO has announced.
Damon Lindelof and Tom Perrotta’s drama, which is based on Perrotta’s novel, follows the Garveys, family trying to come to terms with the sudden departure one day of 2 per cent of the world’s population. The combination of grief, loss and religion baffled viewers in its first run, dividing audiences to the point where a second season seemed far from likely. Miracles can happen in TV land, though, and HBO bought the series back for another 10 episodes, with new characters joining a select few old ones in a completely different location.
That change of location and characters proved just the burst of inspiration the show needed: after a superb, if inconsistent, first season, Lindelof and Perrotta crafted a dazzling follow-up, one that has won widespread critical adoration and built a loyal following. Together, they have proven enough to prompt HBO to renew the series – for one last time.
“It is with great enthusiasm that we welcome back Damon Lindelof, Tom Perrotta and the extraordinary talent behind ‘The Leftovers’ for its third and final season,” HBO President Michael Lombardo said in a statement. “This show has proven to be one of the most distinctive HBO series and we are extremely proud of its unrivaled originality, which has resulted in such a passionate following by our HBO viewers. We admire and fully support Damon’s artistic vision and respect his decision to bring the show to its conclusion next season.”
“I have never, ever experienced the level of creative support and trust that I have received from HBO during the last two seasons of The Leftovers,” added Lindelof. “Tom, myself and our incredible team of writers and producers put tremendous care into designing those seasons as novels unto themselves…with beginnings, middles and ends. As we finished our most recent season, it became clear to us that the series as a whole was following the same model…and with our beginning and middle complete, the most exciting thing for us as storytellers would be to bring The Leftovers to a definitive end. And by ‘definitive,’ we mean ‘wildly ambiguous but hopefully mega-emotional,’ as all things related to this show are destined to be.”
Lindelof said he was “tremendously grateful that HBO is giving us an opportunity to conclude the show on our own terms”.
“An opportunity like this one rarely comes along, and we have every intention of living up to it.”
