Amazon eyes March release for David Oyelowo and Charlize Theron’s Gringo

Amazon is eyeing a March 2018 release for its next original film, Gringo.
The movie is a co-production between STX Entertainment and Amazon Studios. Directed by Nash Edgerton, brother to Joel Edgerton, it marks the filmmaker’s second feature project, following his debut in 2008 with The Square, which starred David Roberts and Claire van der Boom.
He’s getting a star-studded upgraded for his new project, which will star not only David Oyelowo but also Charlize Theron, Amanda Seyfried and Thandie Newton.
Oyelowo plays a businessman who travels to Mexico and finds himself crossing the line from citizen to criminal. Pushing the newly-married guy over the edge is an accident that takes place during his visit, just as the pharmaceutical company he has a stake is about to go public. Stranded with a price on his head, he discovers that the life he had never really existed in the first place.
The action comedy was written by Anthony Tambakis and Matthew Stone, with additional cast members including Sharlto Copley and Joel Edgerton, as well as recent recruit Paris Jackson, the daughter of Michael Jackson, who will portray an “edgy 20-year-old”.
Theron and Nash are producers on the project, alongside Rebecca Yeldham, Tambakis, Beth Kono and A.J. Dix. Trish Hofmann is exec producing.
The film first came together at the 2016 Cannes Film Festival. What a difference a year makes: as the 2017 Cannes festival ends its first weekend, Amazon and STX are now locking in the movie’s premiere date, with a theatrical release in the USA set for 9th March 2018. The date announcement arrives as Amazon is in Cannes eyeing up new possible projects at the Cannes market, not to mention premiering Wonderstruck, Todd Haynes’ new movie.
