Borja Cobeaga will direct Netflix’s next Spanish original movie, Fe de Etarras.
The filmmaker, who was nominated for an Academy Award in 2005 for his live action short, One Too Many, has since gone on to become a notable player in modern Spanish cinema, with his CV including box office hits A Spanish Affair and A Spanish Affair 2, and also The Negotiator, a semi-comedy set just before ETA declared its final truce.
Fe de Etarras is written by Cobeaga and Diego San José (both co-writers of Spanish Affair and Spanish Affair 2) and features Javier Cámara (Narcos), Julián López (Age of Monster, Off Course, Friend Zone), Miren Ibarguren (Anclados, Aída, La que se avecina) and Gorka Otxoa (Allí abajo, Los miércoles no existen, Friend Zone). Tina Sáinz (Las chicas del cable, Águila Roja, Los muertos no se tocan, nene) and Ramón Barea (The Queen of Spain, El Negociador, No controles) also make a special appearance.
A Mediapro production, it takes place in the sweltering summer of 2010 in a small Spanish town. A peculiar, dysfunctional armed group, formed by a veteran eager to prove he is not a coward (Javier Cámara), a couple seemingly held together by ETA (Miren Ibarguren and Gorka Otxoa) and a man from La Mancha who believes becoming a member of the organization or being Chuck Norris is one and the same (Julián López), find themselves stuck in a flat awaiting an elusive phone call which would allow them to go into action. To top it all, the Spanish national football team wins the World Cup in South Africa and has the whole country celebrating.
“Cobeaga demonstrates once again his acute sense of humor, creating a hilarious comedy where this odd group is doomed to fail in a big way,” says Netflix.
Cobeaga, meanwhile, describes it as “like Friends but taking place in a safe house”.
The film marks Netflix’s ongoing commitment to invest in European productions, both series and movies. The production has just begun on the project in Madrid, with the movie to be released worldwide by Netflix at an unconfirmed date.
