It’s only a matter of weeks until True Detective is back on our screens and a new trailer gives us a fresh look at True Detective: Night Country.
Issa López serves as showrunner, writer, and director of the fourth season in the HBO crime anthology. Starring Jodie Foster and Kali Reis, it follows Detective Liz Danvers, who is trying to crack the case of eight men who operate the Tsalal Arctic Research Station – and have vanished without a trace. To solve the case, Danvers and Detective Evangeline Navarro (Kali Reis) will have to confront the darkness they carry in themselves and dig into the haunted truths that lie buried under the eternal ice.
Join Foster and Reis will be an impressive line-up that includes Fiona Shaw, Finn Bennett, Isabella Star Lablanc, Aka Niviâna, Anna Lambe, Joel D Montgrand, Christopher Eccleston and John Hawkes. You can see them in action on Monday 15th January, when the series premieres on Sky Atlantic and streaming service NOW. Episodes will be released weekly, with each of the six instalments available at the same time as the US broadcast – at 2am – and on demand thereafter.

“Sometimes they come here looking for something. Sometimes they find it…” That’s the sound of True Detective returning to our screens for a fourth season – and a new trailer gives us a first look at True Detective: Night Country in action.
Starring Jodie Foster and Kali Reis, the new season will follow Detective Liz Danvers, who is trying to crack the case of six men who go missing at a research station in the Arctic. Along with her colleague, Detective Evangeline Navarro, they will have to confront their own inner darkness as well as the shadowy secrets buried under the ice.
You can expect all those noir-tinged shadows to be fully excavated later this year when the series premieres in the USA on Max, the rebranded name of HBO Max. With Max not set to launch in the UK until 2024 at the earliest, you can expect the series to debut this side of the pond on Sky Atlantic. Jodie Foster to star in True Detective Season 4
27th May 2022
Jodie Foster will take the lead role in True Detective Season 4.
The HBO franchise has been a stop-start affair since its debut in 2014, when Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson turned Nic Pizzolatto’s dark detective drama into a smash hit. After a return-to-form third season, starring Mahershala Ali, HBO revealed recently that a fourth chapter was in the works, with Issa López and Barry Jenkins set to exec-produce.
Now, that’s officially moving ahead, with Jodie Foster signed on to star in what will be titled True Detective: Night Country. Foster, who will also exec-produce the project, will play Detective Liz Danvers, who is trying to crack the case of six men who go missing at a research station in the Arctic. Along with her colleague, Detective Evangeline Navarro, they will have to confront their own inner darkness as well as the shadowy secrets buried under the ice.
Foster is no stranger to the small screen, but mostly behind the camera, having helmed episodes of Orange Is the New Black, Tales from the Loop and Black Mirror. Her last starring TV role, meanwhile, was back in 1975.
There’s no word yet on Foster’s co-star, but in another sign that the project is gaining traction, Shining Girls EP Alan Page Arriaga has joined Lopez to write the new season.
True Detective Season 4 in the works at HBO
20th March 2022
A new chapter of True Detective is once again in the works at HBO.
The crime drama, which was created by Nic Pizzolatto, was a huge hit when it debuted in 2014, starring Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson. Since then, it has returned for a less well-received second season, starring Vince Vaughn, and a third season, starring Mahershala Ali, that was regarded as more of a return to form for the franchise.
Now, HBO content chief Casey Bloys is scratching that itch once again, with another incarnation of the dark drama in the pipeline, with another change-up in the creative team.
Tentatively titled True Detective: Night Country, the new chapter will be exec-produced by Issa López and Barry Jenkins, with the former writing and also directing the pilot and the latter EP-ing via his collective Pastel – which has a first-look TV deal with HBO – alongside Adele Romanski and Mark Ceryak.
López is best known for the acclaimed horror film Tigers Are Not Afraid and is currently working with Noah Hawley on Searchlight’s The Book of Souls. Jenkins, who directed Moonlight, is no stranger to the small screen, having recently made The Underground Railroad for Amazon Prime Video.
Pizzolatto has previously talked of his ideas for a possible fourth season of the detective series, but ultimately didn’t get picked up by HBO. Instead, HBO will be hoping that Jenkins and López can crack the case.
