What’s leaving Netflix UK in January / February 2018?
David Farnor | On 19, Jan 2018
January, a month for making and breaking New Year’s Resolutions. Fortunately, Netflix is making some resolutions easy at the start of the year, with a host of titles racing to the top of your watchlist, if you want to catch them before they’re removed. Jason Statham, Larry Flynt, The Good Wife and Joe Swanberg? Now that’s what we call a set of resolutions worth keeping.
From Freaks and Geeks to Spy, this is your last chance to stream the following on Netflix UK:
Spy – 23rd January
Melissa McCarthy stars in Paul Feig’s comedy about a CIA desk analyst who is sent on her first mission after Jude Law’s super-agent is fatally compromised while tracking arms dealers in Europe. Watch out for a scene-stealing Jason Statham.
Happy Christmas – 25th January
Joe Swanberg’s drama about an immature sister (Anna Kendrick) crashing on the couch of her brother is awkward, intimate and endearingly sincere.
The People vs. Larry Flynt – 25th January
Milos Forman’s classic follows the hedonistically obnoxious, but indomitable Larry Flynt, publisher of Hustler magazine. The film recounts his struggle to make an honest living publishing his porn magazine and how it changes into a battle to protect the freedom of speech for all people.
The Keep – 28th January
“Michael Mann’s second directorial effort, 1983’s curiously undefinable World War II fairytale The Keep, remains sorely overlooked” – read our full review.
The Look of Silence – 1st February
Joshua Oppenheimer delivered one of 2012’s most powerful films with The Act of Killing, which asked the perpetrators of the anti-Communist killings in Indonesia to re-enact their crimes. Now, he has returned to the same subject with The Look of Silence, a documentary that follows Adi, whose brother was killed by one of Indonesia’s death squads, as he confronts those responsible.
The Squid and the Whale – 1st February
This awkwardly hilarious and astutely painful study of a family going through a divorce was Noah Baumbach’s breakthrough film, boasting a cast that includes Jeff Daniels, Laura Linney, Anna Paquin and a young Jesse Eisenberg. Made all too aware of each character’s faults, hazy middle-ground is all that awaits our sympathies and Baumbach nudges us around in the emotional mist with masterful precision.
The Good Wife – 1st February
Before Mike Colter stars as Luke Cage in Netflix’s upcoming Marvel series, catch him in the CBS legal drama, led by the phenomenal Julianna Margulies as the wife of a disgraced State’s Attorney, she returns to work as a junior litigator at law firm Stern, Lockhart & Gardner. She’s joined by Matthew Goode and Alan Cumming and Marc Warren.
Freaks and Geeks – 1st February
Judd Apatow and Paul Feig’s 1999 comedy series is one of those US comedies that was cancelled before its time – but that doesn’t make it not worth watching. The show follows a group of Michigan high-school students in the 1980s, with Lindsay (Linda Cardellini) and her friends making up the Freaks half of the programme (cast members including James Franco, Seth Rogen and Jason Segel) and her brother, Sam (John Francis Daley), heading up the Geeks (cast members including Samm Levine and Martin Starr). From Ben Foster and Ann Dowd to Lizzy Caplan, it’s a series that not only established Segel, Feig and Apatow as comedy forced to be reckoned with, but paved way the way for a number of future stars.
Tomorrowland – 2nd February
Brad Bird’s underrated film follows Casey Newton (Britt Robertson), who finds that she is transported to a futuristic city every time she touches a lapel pin with the letter “T” on it. She tracks down reclusive old scientist Frank Walker (George Clooney) for answers, leading to an unabashedly old-school adventure.
Love & Mercy – 4th February
John Cusack and Paul Dano deliver astounding performances in this biopic of Brian Wilson, which captures the early years and later struggles of the legendary Beach Boys musician.
