The first Red film more or less managed to sell itself with images of Helen Mirren firing a range of long-range weaponry alongside the all-star cast of Bruce Willis, Morgan Freeman and John Malkovich. The result was a hit-and-miss affair that overall managed to be a fun ride with some of Hollywood’s finest, although it wasn’t quite fun enough.
The second outing unfortunately manages to provide much of the same. It’s always enjoyable watching John Malkovich playing kooky or Helen Mirren as a badass – there’s something great about watching Mirren dispatch a batch of villains in any number of ways, while still speaking the Queen’s English. Bruce Willis (as lead character Frank Moses) just manages to look stale and uninterested, which provides a sore note alongside the other two leads, who appear to be having a whale of a time.
In addition to the three returning stars, Mary-Louise Parker and Brian Cox (not the professor) are also back for more. There are the new additions of Anthony Hopkins and Catherine Zeta-Jones as well, both of whom add a little extra to the already tasty formula.
A number of well-worked action scenes keep the excitement levels on point – the film crosses continents as they bounce from the USA to London and Russia – but while most of the cast look to be having a great time here, Willis’ sarcastic tones and blunt humour are starting to feel a little bit too real.
Red 2 is available to watch online on Amazon Prime Video as part of a Prime membership or a £5.99 monthly subscription.
