Walter Presents turns three years old this coming spring, marking 24 months of impressively curated and remarkably consistent foreign-language TV shows brought to UK screens for the first time. Hailing from countries as diverse as Japan, France, Brazil and Mexico, not to mention a whole host of Scandinavian thrillers and mysteries, the result has been a treasure trove of box sets to suit any taste. Alas, as the treasure trove continues to fill up in the new year, some of those gems will be removed to make way for new treats – and so it is that Walter Presents prepares to bid farewell to five of its early titles at the end of December.

Spin: Season 1 – 30th December

Billed as the French ‘House of Cards’ this intoxicating, award-winning drama explores the intense rivalry between two spin doctors, seasoned pro Simon Kapita (Bruno Wolkowitch) and his younger, hipper former friend Ludovic Desmeuze (Grégory Fitoussi). Season 1 begins with France in shock: the President’s been assassinated. Behind the scenes, politicians are already campaigning for the special snap election to be held in 35 days’ time. Former Presidential advisor Simon wants to preserve his friend’s honour and sides with low-level Minister Anne Visage. He believes she’s the only one capable of defeating his political enemy, Prime Minister Philippe Deleuvre. However, Simon finds his former protégé has betrayed him and is now working for his rival. Both spin doctors go to war. Kabul Kitchen – 30th December

This multi-award-winning comedy is based on the real life story of French journalist Marc Victor, who ran a restaurant for expats in Kabul. Set in 2005, the series sees his world of amusing dictators and Taliban neighbours disrupted by the arrival of a daughter he hasn’t seen in 20 years. Read our review

Heartless – 30th December

Created by the writer of The Bridge and director of The Killing – and featuring a standout performance from the latter’s Nikolaj Kopernicus – this supernatural thriller is set in an elite Danish boarding school and follows two students with a curse: to live, they need to suck the energy out of other people. However, if they don’t stop their sucking in time, their victims will burn to death. However, the siblings are not the only ones with secrets… Read our review

Cenk Batu – 30th December

Cenk Batu is part of a long-running Germany series called Tatort, which is jointly produced regional TV stations, each of which contribute their own episodes to the show based in their respective cities. Cenk Batu hails from Hamburg’s NDR and follows the eponymous undercover agent for Germany’s state police. He infiltrates the underworld of Hamburg, uncovering corruption and industrial espionage. The dark and moody series stars Turkish-German actor Mehmet Kurtulus, who helped to draw 7 million viewers to the programme’s premiere in its home country.

The Out-Laws – 30th December

This wickedly dark comedy from Belgium follows the Goethals sisters, who have been tied together since the premature death of their parents years ago. But ever since their fifth sister’s marriage to a pain-in-the-ass brother-in-law, the bond has frayed, so the four do the only natural thing: plan to kill him. Read our review
