What’s leaving Sky and NOW TV in September / October 2016?
David Farnor | On 18, Sep 2016
Ah, September. The month when kids hate going back to school and parents look with dread at the line-up on their favourite streaming site, lest their kids’ favourites disappear, only adding to the back-to-school blues.
With Disney’s exclusive subscription streaming service still going strong, there’s some sad news for Sky Cinema and NOW customers, as this month sees some more movies from Disney’s archives depart Sky’s library. That means The Muppets will be bidding farewell, alongside Frozen and some of Pixar’s best. (Fortunately, there are more than a few strong additions to keep the parents entertained, while the children are off doing homework – check out what’s new and coming soon to Sky Cinema here.)
This is your last chance to stream the following…
Fury – 22nd September
Brad Pitt and Shia LaBeouf star in David Ayer’s war movie, which puts you head-first into the claustrophobic environment of a tank – a confined space that forces men to bond, as they all undergo the same adrenaline-fuelled urge to survive.
Toy Story 3 – 22nd September
Pixar’s funny, moving finale confirms Toy Story as one of the best trilogies of all time.
Frozen – 29th September
A tale of two sisters, who happen to be princesses, this charming Disney flick is surely the House of Mouse’s most feminist to date. More a tale of female relationships than a rom-com or adventure, this is refreshing, amusing and moving stuff. If you’re already singing “Let It Go” in your head, this is for you.
Brave – 30th September
Pixar’s animated gem may look like a story about an archer versus a bear but emerges as a sweet and simple tale of one daughter and her relationship with her mother.
Frankenweenie – 30th September
Tim Burton expands his old short into a feature without losing any of its dazzling imagination, dark humour, or incredible attention to detail. Stop-motion, monochrome, obsessed with death; Frankenweenie might not sound like a kids’ film (if you’ve recently suffered a pet bereavement, bring several tissues) but pitches the moving tale of friendship, loss and, erm, electronically-induced resurrection at just the right level for adults and children alike.
John Carter – 30th September
Andrew Stanton’s hugely underrated Disney sci-fi sees Civil War veteran John (Taylor Kitsch) awake on the surface of Mars – only to be caught up in a civil war. The names may be silly, but this manages that rare cinematic feat of capturing the thrill of adventure.
The Muppets – 30th September
Everyone’s favourite furry puppets wave goodbye this September, from their recent feature-length reboot to Muppets from Space, The Muppets Take Manhattan and, of course, The Muppet Christmas Carol.
Ratatouille – 30th September
Brad Bird’s tale of a rat who wants nothing more than to be a chef in a Paris kitchen is one of Pixar’s most popular hits. Warning: It will make you hungry.
The Matrix – 30th September
Would you take the red pill or the blue pill? The Wachowskis’ sci-fi is as mind-blowing as you remember, Mr. Anderson.
The Odd Couple – 30th September
Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau are on unbeatable form in this classic comedy about two divorcees who share an apartment.
