The Flash Season 1 – 31st October

Love Arrow? You’ll probably like The Flash, The CW’s companion series about the popular super-speedy superhero. With Season 3 on the way this week, you’ll have to be equally fast to catch up on the first run before it zooms over the horizon.

The Muppets Season 1 – 31st October

The mockumentary reboot of The Muppets, which documents the ups and downs of the Muppets as they prepare to reunite for a new TV series, has since been cancelled by ABC, but there are still laughs to be found in this uneven first season.

Broad City Season 1 to 3 – 1st November

What started out as a web series about two women in New York has blossomed into a Comedy Central favourite, starring Ilana Glazer and Abbi Jacobson.

Ballers Season 2 – 27th October

Dwayne Johnson stars in this half-hour comedy about the lives of former and current football players. He plays former superstar Spencer Strasmore, as he gets his life on track in retirement while mentoring other current and former players through the daily grind of the business of football.

Amy Schumer Live: Mostly Sex Stuff – 28th October

Any chance to see Amy Schumer live shouldn’t be brushed off lightly.

I’m Alan Partridge Season 1 – 31st October

Catfish: The TV Show Season 1 to 5 – 31st October

If you saw Nev and Ariel Schulman’s mind-blowing documentary, this TV series is well worth checking out, as they uncover similar social media hook-ups every week – only for their online counterpart not to turn out quite as they expect in real life.

John Carter – 22nd October

Andrew Stanton’s hugely underrated Disney sci-fi sees Civil War veteran John (Taylor Kitsch) awake on the surface of Mars – only to be caught up in a civil war. The names may be silly, but this manages that rare cinematic feat of capturing the thrill of adventure.

Birdman – 26th October

Did you miss Birdman in the cinemas, before it won the Oscar for Best Motion Picture? Alejandro González Iñárritu’s comedy – which sees Michael Keaton play a former superhero star attempting to prove his worth as an artist by staging a theatrical production on Broadway – is breathtaking, uproarious stuff.

Ex Machina – 31st October

“If you’ve created artificial intelligence, that isn’t the history of man. It’s the history of gods.” That’s programmer Caleb to his boss, Nathan, after winning a prize to spend a week on a private work retreat – only to discover it’s really to put a top secret robot through the Turing test. The robot in question? Ava, a female with enough self-awareness to know what she is, and enough smarts to do something about it. Domnhall Gleeson and Oscar Isaac are excellent as the programmers – but Alicia Vikander steals the show.

Little Shop of Horrors – 31st October

Who can’t identify with the tale of a loser who accidentally purchases a man-eating plant from outer space, which forces him to feed people to it? Hot on the heels of The Muppets Take Manhattan, Frank Oz’s darkly hilarious musical combines superb puppet work and a killer cast – watch out for Steve Martin as a violent dentist and Bill Murray as his patient – with irresistibly snappy songs from Disney legend Alan Menken. It’s hard to believe it’s only a PG, but even harder to believe it got made in the first place. Show-stopping stuff for all the family.

Strangers on a Train – 31st October

This thrilling tale of double-crossing killers, after two strangers meet on a train and appear to agree to swap murders, is one of Hitchcock’s best.

Westworld – 31st October

With the new HBO TV series in full swing, don’t miss the chance to go back and revisit the original 1973 sci-fi film, written and directed by Michael Crichton, which sees a theme park staffed by robots go horribly, violently wrong.

Harry Potter – 31st October

“You’re a wizard, Harry.” Ever since Hagrid said those immortal words, Warner Bros’ franchise based on JK Rowling’s books just kept getting better, building to an epic finale that actually justified being split into two halves. Now, all of the films (including the extended Philosopher’s Stone and Chamber of Secrets) are disapparating. All-night marathon, anyone?

A Clockwork Orange – 3rd November

Stanley Kubrick’s masterpiece remains as shocking and stylish today as it was 40 odd years ago.

Wild – 5th November

Reese Witherspoon gives a career-best performance in this drama about Cheryl Strayed, who decides to hike all the way up America’s 1,100-mile Pacific Crest Trail – from Mexico to Canada – on her own. Nick Hornby’s script (based on Cheryl’s own memoirs) ensures that Wild’s tale become one not of self-penitence but self-appreciation. The decision to approach her sins of the past as part of what makes her who she is in the present makes for a positive and uplifting journey.
