What’s leaving Sky and NOW TV in June / July 2017?
David Farnor | On 20, Jun 2017
With Twin Peaks back on our screens for the first time in a quarter of a century, it’s easy to miss some of the other TV shows available on Sky Box Sets. With the end of June approaching, though, several of them are disappearing, whether it’s old classics such as Green Wing or newer treats, such as Supergirl and Gomorrah. Most of all, though, the end of the month marks the end of the road for hanging out with Lena Dunham’s Girls.
For Sky Cinema fans, there are some equally sad farewells on the cards, from Mad Max: Fury Road and Ant-Man to Zodiac, Magic Mike XXL and Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation.
Not a Sky customer? You can get access to both Sky Box Sets and Sky Cinema through contract-free streaming service NOW, which costs £6.99 a month (for an Entertainment Membership, including Sky 1, Sky Atlantic, FOX UK and more) or £9.99 a month for the whole Sky Cinema catalogue. Whichever you subscribe to, this is your last chance to stream the following:
TV
Green Wing Season 1 and 2 – 27th June
Tamsin Greig, Stephen Mangan and Julian Rhind-Tutt star in Channel 4’s medical comedy set in a (thankfully) fictional hospital. Fast-paced, occasionally in slow-motion, this is a silly, surreal, side-splitting sitcom.
Supergirl: Season 2 – 29th June
The CW’s adaptation of the DC comic books is a winning blend of strong female role models, impressive action, upbeat humour and a charismatic lead performance by Melissa Benoist.
Gomorrah Season 1 – 30th June
Sky’s first foreign language series, Gomorrah shows the inside story of the Naples mafia from the point of view of Ciro, the obedient right-hand man of the clan’s godfather. Gritty and realistic, it’s based on Robert Saviano’s book, which previously inspired the 2008 film of the same name. That was nominated for both a BAFTA and a Golden Globe.
Wayward Pines Season 1 and 2 – 30th June
Secret Service Agent Ethan Burke (Matt Dillon) is on a mission to locate two missing federal agents, and his search leads him to the idyllic town of Wayward Pines, Idaho. Battered and bruised from a recent car accident, could he just have concussion or is there something seriously sinister about this picture-perfect town?
Marcella Season 1 – 30th June
Anna Friel is on fine form in this dark crime thriller. Co-created by The Bridge’s Hans Rosenfeldt and Nicola Larder (Sky’s development executive on The Tunnel, Lawless, Psychopath Next Door), the show brings the sinister chills of Scandinavian noir to the streets of Britain.
Girls Season 1 to 5 – 2nd July
Don’t miss your chance to hang out with the Girls this summer, as Seasons 1 to 5 of Lena Dunham’s show depart – taking with them the dreamy Adam Driver.
Baskets Season 1 – 12th July
Co-created by Louis C.K. and starring Zach Galifianakis, this dark comedy follows Chip Baskets, who dreams of becoming a classically trained French clown in Paris.

Movies
Ant-Man – 21st June
Paul Rudd is on laugh-out-loud form in this fun debut outing for the world’s smallest superhero.
Frankenweenie – 24th June
Tim Burton expands his old short into a feature without losing any of its dazzling imagination, dark humour, or incredible attention to detail. Stop-motion, monochrome, obsessed with death; Frankenweenie might not sound like a kids’ film (if you’ve recently suffered a pet bereavement, bring several tissues) but pitches the moving tale of friendship, loss and, erm, electronically-induced resurrection at just the right level for adults and children alike.
The Truman Show – 29th June
Jim Carrey is on career-best form in this witty, poignant satire on reality TV, as one man discovers he’s the star of a series all about his life.
Zodiac – 30th June
David Fincher’s slow-burn thriller about the infamous serial killer and the hunt to work out his identity is a painstakingly constructed masterpiece fuelled by superb performances from Jake Gyllenhaal and Mark Ruffalo, mystery, fear and obsession.
Tropic Thunder – 30th June
This fantastically observed satire of Hollywood blockbusting follows a group of actors trying to make the ultimate war movie. Ben Stiller and Jack Black are wonderful as a clueless action man and drug addict, but it’s Robert Downey Jr.’s obsessively method performer who brings the biggest laughs. “I’m a dude playing a dude disguised as another dude!” he yells with an incredibly straight face. The over-the-top finale loses some of the hilarity, but only because it so closely resembles the product its parodying: sometimes, the best satire is scarily believable.
Tangled – 30th June
From its winning music (by Alan Menken) to the stunning visuals, Tangled takes a female protagonist of old and gives her a modern story that’s engaging across the board, winning over everyone watching at home – even the boys and the baldies. Best of all? There’s not a talking animal in sight.
Mission: Impossible – 30th June
From the opening embassy break-in to the central computer-hanging set piece, Brian De Palma’s low-key outing is the closest the movie franchise has felt to the original TV show, while the use of familiar characters turned a smart blockbuster into a gripping look at a world of deception and distrust.
Mission: Impossible II – 30th June
Mission: Impossible’s strength is that it’s a director’s franchise – and this sequel embraces that, as John Woo serves up the most unabashedly John Woo film of his career. Slow-mo, motorbikes, doves, what more could you want?
Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation – 6th July
Tom Cruise has never looked younger in this sequel that proves practical stunts, spy hijinks and Simon Pegg are a combo with as much magic as ever. Rebecca Ferguson, though, steals the whole show as enigmatic agent Ilsa Faust.
Magic Mike XXL – 7th July
Come again? Steven Soderbergh’s Magic Mike was a heartfelt character study of men who happened to be strippers. Magic Mike XXL, on the other hand, is a film about male stripping. And that’s absolutely a good thing. Especially when it involves Joe Manganiello and a petrol station.
