Penny Dreadful: S3 – 21st July

Eva Green, Timothy Dalton and co. return for a final season of John Logan’s hauntingly beautiful monster story mash-up. If you haven’t caught up yet, do it now.

The Jinx – 27th July

HBO’s six-part documentary, directed and produced by Andrew Jarecki and produced and shot by Marc Smerling, exposes long-buried information discovered during a seven-year investigation of a series of unsolved crimes, and the man at their centre: Robert Durst, scion of New York’s billionaire Durst family.

Long suspected in the 1982 disappearance of his young wife in New York, the 2000 murder of the key witness in the case in Beverly Hills, and the subsequent murder and dismemberment of a neighbour in Texas, Durst has consistently maintained his innocence.

If you liked Serial or Making a Murderer, you’ll love this.

Veep S5 – 27th July

Armando Iannucci’s political comedy returns for a fifth season, but with Curb Your Enthusiasm’s David Mandel replacing the Brit in the role of showrunner.

The Enfield Haunting – 31st July

Not impressed by The Conjuring 2, Sky’s mini-series telling the same true story is wonderfully spooky stuff. The three-part drama is a dramatisation of the terrifying and bizarre events that took place at an ordinary house in Enfield during the autumn of 1977. Timothy Spall plays Maurice Grosse, a paranormal researcher who strikes up a connection with Janet (Eleanor Worthington-Cox), when he investigates the strange happenings at the Hodgson family home. Matthew Macfadyen plays Guy Lyon Playfair, Grosse’s sceptical co-investigator, while Juliet Stevenson plays his wife, who is struggling to come to terms with his all-encompassing obsession with the investigation.

Broad City S3 – 6th August

Abbi and Ilana return for a third run of the odd-couple comedy about two best friends navigating their 20s in New York City. As Season 3 begins, Abbi and Ilana experience wardrobe malfunctions, and set out on a desperate search for a public bathroom.

The Maze Runner – 1st August

Ever wished that someone had remade 90s horror Cube for kids? Meet The Maze Runner, another young adult novel series that has been turned into a film franchise – but unlike the others, this sees our teens wake up trapped in a gigantic maze, where new boys arrive via a mysterious elevator. Until one day, a girl turns up. The cast (including Thomas Sangster and Will Poulter) face the sci-fi premise with straight faces, while the creatures scuttling through the labyrinth are genuinely unsettling.

Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang – 8th July

Iron Man 3. Lethal Weapon. Shane Black seriously likes Christmas. His best December-set outing, though, is easily this post-modern film noir, which stars Robert Downey Jr. as a wannabe detective, who untangles a conspiracy worthy of Chinatown in a snow-covered LA. Darkly funny and boasting a stellar turn from Val Kilmer, this is a buddy comedy that will leave you with a festive smile on your face.
