What’s leaving Netflix UK in December 2019 / January 2020?
David Farnor | On 17, Dec 2019
Oh the weather outside is perfect for bingeing box sets in your Christmas jumper, but with all the new things to unwrap, it’s easy to miss some older gems slipping away into the long, dark evening of the digital void, as their rights expire and they depart your favourite streaming service.
This is your last chance to stream the following on Netflix UK:
Miss Stevens – 19th December
Part-road trip comedy, part-intimate teen drama, Julia Hart’s directorial debut is a charmingly honest exploration of student-teacher relationships.
A Most Violent Year – 20th December
Oscar Isaac stars in this period drama about a fuel businessmen, who is trying to fight the corruption of 1980s New York, which threatens to undermine both his marriage and his business empire.
The Beguiled – 20th December
Although a world away from Dirty Harry, Thomas Cullinan’s novel about a wounded Civil War soldier who’s taken in by the ladies of a rural Mississippi boarding school was first made in the same year (1971) by the same director (Don Siegel) and star (Clint Eastwood). Shrouded in Sofia Coppola’s trademark gauze, this remake casts Colin Farrell as John McBurney, the Union casualty who finds himself recuperating in the bosom of a Seminary for Young Ladies run by the estimable Martha Farnsworth (Nicole Kidman). Naturally, McBurney’s arrival arouses much interest, especially from teacher Edwina (Kirsten Dunst) and student Carol (Elle Fanning).
Lo and Behold: Reveries of the Connected World – 22nd December
Bizarre, surprising, hilarious, full of insight and vaguely disturbing, Werner Herzog and the Internet are a match made in cyber-heaven in this documentary.
Maudie – 30th December
Life begins for downtrodden Maudie (Sally Hawkins), a stammering neurotic, when she gets the job of a live-in housemaid in the house of short-fused, taciturn Nova Scotian fish seller Everett (Ethan Hawke). It’s a strange, initially abusive, relationship but they reach an accommodation in their run-down shack and Everett – after Maude’s completed her chores – allows her to paint, an occupation that soon attracts the attention of rich New York collectors…and eventually Richard Nixon.
DreamWorks Animation – 1st December
A whole host of DreamWorks Animation favourites are departing at the start of 2020, from Kung Fu Panda and Kung Fu Panda 2 to How to Train Your Dragon. Although, with Netflix and DreamWorks expanding their deal in 2018, the odds on them returning in the future are favourable.
The Hunger Games – 1st December
Don’t miss your chance to binge on the full box set of the young adult franchise, which sees Jennifer Lawrence on excellent form as Katnis Everdeen, the unwitting leader of a rebellion in a dystopia that forces young people to combat each other once a year.
Bridesmaids – 1st December
Intelligent, amusing and brilliantly performed, this hilarious wedding comedy stuffs character and heart in alongside the jokes. When it’s on form it’s unbeatable.
The Hateful Eight – 1st December
A Christmas film from the director of Pulp Fiction? An anti-western? A contemporary slice of social commentary? Gripping, surprising and superbly executed, The Hateful Eight is a return to form for Tarantino in all the ways that you least expect.
He Named Me Malala – 1st December
This inspiring documenary tells the story of a teenage Pakistani girl shot for her advocacy of women’s education, her survival and her continued efforts.
Murder Party (2007) – 1st January
Jeremy Saulnier’s low-budget horror comedy is a fun, promising directorial debut.
Rise of the Guardians – 1st December
The Easter Bunny, the Tooth Fairy and Santa Claus are together at last in this entertaining animated adventure that might be DreamWorks’ most under-appreciated film.
Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit – 1st December
Can your favourite stop-motion duo work as a feature-length film? By heck, they can: Aardman’s 85-minute adventure is full of visual slapstick, verbal wit and endless puns, not to mention Ralph Fiennes in his first truly comedic role – and, of course, a giant monster rabbit. It’s when you stop noticing the action set pieces are made out of clay that you realise just how superb it is.
Wind River – 1st December
Taylor Sheridan’s directorial debut is a sombre, shocking, visceral piece of cinema..
Zero Dark Thirty – 1st December
Kathryn Bigelow’s account of the black ops mission to capture or kill Osama bin Laden across 10 years was controversial when first released, but the director plays her even hand cooly throughout. However you choose to read its depiction of events, this is absolutely gripping.
My Best Friend’s Wedding – 1st December
“From the moment I wake up…”
Girls Trip – 4th January
Regina Hall, Queen Latifah, Jada Pinkett Smith and Tiffany Haddish star in this raucous comedy about four friends who go on a work vacation to New Orleans, where one is a keynote speaker at a festival.
Grimm – 6th January 2020
Detective Nick Burkhardt carries out a Buffy-like duty of hunting down nasty monsters in this crime series inspired by the tales of the Brothers Grimm.
The Wolf of Wall Street – 10th January 2020
Leonard DiCaprio is on charismatic form in Martin Scorsese’s jet-black comedy about scheming stockbroker Jordan Belfort.
The Fault in Our Stars – 13th January 2020
Shailene Woodley and Ansel Elgort bring John Green’s novel to life with a touching sincerity, as we see two teenagers living with cancer fall in love.
Inception – 15th January 2020
Christopher Nolan’s mind-blowing sci-fi literally folds Paris in on itself to achieve the director’s ambitious, imaginative aims: to dissect dreams, reality and memories within the constraints of a mainstream blockbuster. The form struggles at times to keep hold of the content – and that’s exactly the point. If you’ve never seen it, here’s your chance. If you already have, see it again.
