Ready Player One – 16th October

Steven Spielberg’s sci-fi romp. Tye Sheridan stars as Wade Watts, a lonely slum-dwelling teen who takes the fight to the money-hungry suits out to turn the Oasis – an immersive VR fantasyland created by oddball genius James Halliday (Mark Rylance) – into a soulless advertising tool. Together Wade and a group of likeminded underdogs, including Olivia Cooke’s Samantha, must use their in-game avatars to complete three challenges before chief wrong’un Nolan Sorrento (Ben Mendelsohn) beats them to it.

Game Night – 16th October

One of the funniest movies of 2018.

Bad Moms – 16th October

Mila Kunis, Kristen Bell and Kathryn Hahn have comic chemistry to burn in this entertaining comedy.

Rampage – 17th October

This ludicrous sci-fi action romp sees Dwayne Johnson reprise his unflappable day-saving routine as Davis Okoye, a hunky primatologist called into action when his beloved albino gorilla, George, is infected by a serum developed by a shady gene manipulation company. Before you know it, George and two fellow infectees (a crocodile and a wolf) are monstrously oversized and threatening to level Chicago.

Cape Fear – 19th October

After serving a 14-year prison sentence for raping a young woman, Max stalks Sam, his defence lawyer, and his family to take revenge for concealing evidence. Robert De Niro stars in Martin Scorsese’s remake the 1962 film of the same name

Blade – 20th October

Wesley Snipes kicks undead butt in this excellent vampire flick.

Hacksaw Ridge – 21st October

Andrew Garfield delivers a superbly heartfelt performance in this moving film about WWII American Army Medic Desmond T. Doss, who served during the Battle of Okinawa but refused to kill people.

Jurassic Park – 21st October

With your window to watch the dino-tastic original trilogy closing, think less about the fact that you could watch it and more about why you should.

Hitch – 22nd October

Will Smith is on charming form in this comedy about a ‘date doctor’ coaching nerds in the art of seduction – but he’s not so smooth when he meets a savvy journo played by Eva Mendes.

The Remains of the Day – 22nd October

Merchant and Ivory’s formidable producer-director duo are longstanding masters of the English language period film adaptation. Among their greatest efforts, is this subdued rumination on the intimate tragedy of choosing duty over romance, and an impressive exercise in restraint by Anthony Hopkins.

Small Soldiers – 24th October

Joe Dante’s sci-fi action flick about toy soldiers that come to life, leaving two kids (including a young Kirsten Dunst) caught in the middle of an ancient war between two plastic races is unexpectedly charming stuff.

Eyes Wide Shut – 24th October

Stanley Kubrick’s final film was also his most debated, starring Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman as a New York couple who infiltrate a secret occult society.

Roman Emmerich’s disaster flick is spectacular, brainless entertainment.

Gangs of New York – 25th October

Daniel Day-Lewis is on intimidating form in Martin Scorsese’s period drama about the formation of New York and America as we know it.

Once – 26th October

Brief Encounter in Dublin, this musical drama is moving and toe-tapping in equal measure.

Inside Llewyn Davis – 26th October

Oscar Isaac and the Coens are perfectly in tune for this mature, offbeat drama about failure, grief and guitars.

Little Women (1995) – 26th October

Winona Ryder, Gabriel Byrne, Samantha Mathis, Kirsten Dunst, Claire Danes, Christian Bale and Susan Sarandon all star in this wonderful adaptation of Louise May Alcott’s seminal novel.

John Wick – 27th October

Keanu Reeves is on killer form in the hard-hitting first entry in this action franchise.

Unsane – 29th October

This enjoyably grubby B-movie from Steven Soderbergh is a superb showcase for Claire Foy.

Midnight Special – 29th October

Jeff Nichols confirms himself as one of the most exciting, recognisable US indie directors around with this quietly dazzling sci-fi, which sees the government and a mysterious cult pursue a young boy with special powers and his kidnappers across the country. Steeped in Spielbergian sentiment and sincerity, it’s a film that channels the nostalgic wonder of the 80s into an engrossing study of fatherhood and faith. If you liked Stranger Things, try this.

Martin Freeman stars in Debbie Isitt’s charming comedy about a grumpy teacher put in charge of his primary school’s nativity. The improvised hijinks from the young performers prompted the director to return for multiple sequels, but the real sparkle and shine is in this cute original.

Director Mary Harron’s stylish and side-splitting adaptation of Bret Easton Ellis’ controversial novel showcases Christian Bale’s unnerving performance and some of the scariest pop tunes of the decade.

Keanu Reeves might not be a ringer for the comic book antihero, but this feature-length outing for the occult detective is an entertainingly chilling ride – with a scene-stealing turn from Tilda Swinton.

Kiss Kiss Bang Bang – 7th November

Iron Man 3. Lethal Weapon. Shane Black seriously likes Christmas. His best December-set outing, though, is easily this post-modern film noir, which stars Robert Downey Jr. as a wannabe detective, who untangles a conspiracy worthy of Chinatown in a snow-covered LA. Darkly funny and boasting a stellar turn from Val Kilmer, this is a buddy comedy that will leave you with a festive smile on your face.

Warrior – 7th November

This hard-hitting MMA drama starring Tom Hardy and Joel Edgerton packs a real punch.

You’ve Got Mail – 12th November

Nora Ephron’s final definitive rom-com once again brings together Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan to tell the tale of a small bookshop owner who finds herself in competition with the boss of a gigantic chain of stores – all while the two fall in love online. A nice, forward-thinking story of modern technology and offline identity, it paved the way for the rom-com to enter the modern age. It’s testament to how good Hanks and Ryan are on-screen together that you just about forgive him for some gaslighting behaviour in the movie’s final act.

The Machinist – 12th November

Christian Bale made headlines with his jaw-dropping transformation for this film, shedding over 60 pounds to play an insomniac losing his grip on reality. But don’t let that overshadow the film itself: an accomplished and nightmarish psychological thriller.

Twister – 15th November

Bill Paxton and Helen Hunt play a bunch of stormchasers in Jan de Bont’s 1996 perfect storm of blockbusting entertainment.

Tim Burton’s Corpse Bride – 16th November

The director mixes his Gothic sensibility with stunning stop-motion to spooky effect in this darkly comic tale of a man who finds himself accidentally betrothed to a dead woman.

In the Name of the Father – 17th November

Daniel Day-Lewis stars in Jim Sheridan’s Oscar-nominated drama about Gerry Conlon, a young Irish man living in London who is wrongly sentenced to life in prison with his father after the IRA bombing of 1974. He spends the next 15 years trying to prove his innocence.
