You’re Next – Sunday 27th September

When was the last time you were surprised by a horror movie? Adam Wingard’s witty slasher sees a group of rich relatives reunite in the family cottage one weekend – only for bloody mayhem to ensue. Dark, hilarious and unpredictable. Think Home Alone for adults. Don’t miss it.

Avatar: The Last Airbender – Tuesday 29th September

Not impressed by the movie? Put M. Night Shyamalan’s adaptation out of your mind: the original animated series is far more impressive. Unfortunately, though, it’s about to depart Netflix’s streaming line-up – along with a bunch of other Nickelodeon titles, including iCarly and Rugrats. Unlike the latter series, whose farewell will disappoint your kids, this one will also leave a whole in many adults’ watch lists.

Boyz n the Hood – Wednesday 30th September

John Singleton’s seminal 1991 drama leaves Netflix just as it departs fellow subscription service MUBI – but before it goes, the story of three men in the Crenshaw ghetto in Los Angeles is a perfect companion piece to Straight Outta Compton while it’s in cinemas.

Fresh Meat – Wednesday 30th September

Jesse Armstrong and Sam Bain’s comedy series about university life is one of several Channel 4 series set to depart Netflix UK at the end of the month – but, as always, there’s no guarantee that means Channel 4 and Netflix won’t renew the licence, as they have done with many other shows in the past.

Hero – Wednesday 30th September

Removed only a couple of months after it returned to the site, Zhang Yimou’s 2002 martial arts film stars Jet Li as an unnamed fighter credited for defeating three of the king’s most dangerous enemies. The simple structure gives way to a complex string of mini visual masterpieces, with colour-coded flashbacks full of accomplished choreography.

The Naked Gun – Wednesday 30th September

The Office (US) – Wednesday 30th September

The American remake of the British sitcom is – whisper it – funnier than the original. Dont’ believe us? Try it while you can.

Sliding Doors – Friday 2nd October

Gwyneth Paltrow and John Hannah are on irresistably charming form in one of the 90s’ best rom-coms. The fact that it involves parallel universes is a bonus.

Wreck-It Ralph – Friday 2nd October

Disney’s animation may be more about product placement than video games, but that hasn’t stopped it winning over a sizeable following of fans.

Drag Me to Hell – Monday 5th October

Sam Raimi’s horror about a gypsy woman placing a curse on a young woman is silly, yes, but scarily good.

Bambi – Thursday 8th October

Finally, those traumatic childhood memories can be put behind you.

Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End – Thursday 8th October

Whether you’ve grown tired of Captain Jack Sparrow or not, Disney’s third sea-faring adventure is undoubtedly a step up from the second.
