YouTube Premium launches student discounts

YouTube is launching new student discounts for its subscription service, YouTube Premium.
YouTube’s subscription streaming package, which offers access to YouTube Originals series and movies, a streaming music platform (YouTube Music Premium), and an ad-free experience across all of YouTube, began life as a US-only affair. Now, as it expands overseas this year, the online giant is looking at new ways to woo subscribers. First up, just in time for the school holidays, are students.
As of this week, eligible university and college students can get discounted membership to YouTube Premium, whether they’re compiling classical music for studying or a playlist for a party, or just want to binge a YouTube exclusive box set, such as Karate Kid sequel Cobra Kai or Tom Felton-starring sci-fi Origin.
Student plans are available for YouTube Music Premium for $4.99 and YouTube Premium for $6.99. Students who sign up by 31st January 2019 can also lock in YouTube Premium at a special rate of $5.99.
The only bad news? The discounts aren’t yet available in the UK, and only apply to full-time students at an accredited college or university in the USA. YouTube plans to expand student discounts to more countries in the future, however. And, in the meantime, you can keep up-to-speed with what’s worth watching on YouTube Premium with a full-priced subscription by checking out our YouTube Premium reviews here.
