Arrow is not yet six months old but it continues to double down on its distinct curation, bringing together a cult favourite, some Down Under dystopia, a slice of Japanese monster movies and triple serving of Borgen.
Here’s what’s coming soon to Arrow in June 2021:
The Daimajin Trilogy – 1st July
Remarkably overlooked in the West, this trilogy comprises Daimajin, Return of Daimajin and Wrath of Daimajin, three thrilling tales of feudal oppression and divine retribution, meted out by the iconic stone warrior of the title, combining lavish period detail with jaw-dropping special effects.
Dinner in America – 1st July
Welcome to the Dollhouse collides with Napoleon Dynamite, with a touch of Heathers, in this hilarious, quirky DIY love letter to being authentically yourself, finding your voice, and being punk AF. Produced by Ben Stiller and directed by Adam Rehemier (The Bunny Game), this is a feisty and fresh cult classic in the making.
Dachra: Curse of the Witch – 1st June
Set against the backdrop of contemporary Tunisia, journalism student Yassmine and two classmates set out to solve the cold case of Mongia, a woman found mutilated 25 years ago and now imprisoned in an asylum suspected of witchcraft. As they pursue their investigation, the three friends stumble into the archaic and ominous world of Dachra, an isolated countryside compound filled with goats, silent women, mysterious drying meat and home to a cult. When Yassmine discovers Dachra’s secrets, she must fight to escape alive.
The Quiet Earth – 1st June
In this sci-fi cult classic, Zac Hobson, a mid-level scientist working on a global energy project, wakes up to a nightmare. As he searches empty cities for other survivors, Zac’s mental state begins to deteriorate – culminating in the film’s iconic and hotly debated ending.
Xtro 3 – 1st June
Marines travel to a deserted island to diffuse bombs, only to be terrorized by a deadly alien creature.
The Stylist Short Cuts – 7th June
A killer collection of short films, supported and handpicked by the team behind The Stylist. This collection celebrates and supports female filmmakers working on both sides of the camera within the horror film industry, with titles including the unnerving Unsafe by Connor Sandehinrich, Tristan Risk’s stylish Reptilse House, which iffs on The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, and Alchemia, based on an infamous French serial killer couple.
Inspector De Luca – 11th June
Between 1938 and 1948, from the height of Italy’s Fascist regime to the end of the tumultuous post-war period, Chief Detective De Luca investigates and solves crimes in the City of Bologna and along the Adriatic coast. With little or no regard for those in power, whoever they happen to be, his solitary, uncompromising character often lands him in trouble, but his respect is reserved for the truth and justice alone. In the four TV movies of the series, Unauthorized Investigation, Carte Blanche , The Damned Season and Via Della Oche, each taken from a novel by best-selling mystery writer Carlo Lucarelli, Chief Detective De Luca always ultimately gets to the bottom of his cases, though what he finds leaves a bitter aftertaste.
Inspector Nardone – 11th June
Post-war Milan is the ideal breeding ground for a new wave of criminal activity. A crime-scene that is very different from what we are used to today: an old-fashioned system of organized crime, made up of thieves and outlaws who share a specific moral code, which absolutely condemns homicide. A new chief officer is assigned to the Milan Police Department, as if to settle a score for having exposed his corrupt colleagues. This is just one of the various difficulties that Mario Nardone, an authentic Neapolitan, must face in the sophisticated and urbane Milan. A city which, nevertheless, Nardone loves unconditionally, and where he plans to bring up his beloved, albeit somewhat neglected, children. Based on a real figure, Mario Nardone was a true legend in Milan during the 50s and 60s. Straightforward, persistently stubborn but also endowed with a strong moral code and a great sense of humanity, Nardone has deep loves; including his long-suffering family, good cuisine and cracking jokes at every opportunity.
The Legend of the Stardust Brothers – 11th June
In 1985, Macoto Tezka (son of the great manga artist Osamu Tezuka) met musician and TV personality Haruo Chicada who had made a soundtrack to a movie which didn’t actually exist: The Legend of the Stardust Brothers. At the time Macoto was just 22 years old, a film-student with many short experimental films under his belt, but yet to make a feature-debut and of course had the pressure of the TEZUKA name. With Chicada as producer, Tezka then adapted this “fake soundtrack” into the real movie story of “The Stardust Brothers”. With inspiration from Phantom of the Paradise and Rocky Horror Picture Show, Tezuka assembled a cast of some of Japan’s most famous musicians of the time, including such greats as Kiyohiko Ozaki, ISSAY, Sunplaza Nakano and Hiroshi Takano, alongside many famous names in Manga such as Monkey Punch (Lupin the 3rd), Shinji Nagashima (Hanaichi Monme), Yosuke Takahashi (Mugen Shinsi) and even many upcoming film directors of the time such as Kiyoshi Kurosawa (Tokyo Sonata) and Daihachi Yoshida (The Kirishima Thing). The resulting film The Legend of the Stardust Brothers is the exact definition of a cult film.
Fog and Crimes – 11th June
Inspired by the four famous novels by Valerio Varesi, each episode follows an investigation by Soneri, Ferrara Police Chief. He works with a faithful squad on a series of crimes, each hiding a disturbing mystery, with the startling and grotesque undertones of the apparently calm world of the wealthy countryside.
Crimes of Passion – 18th June
Crimes of Passion is a period piece set in 1950s Sweden, primarily in the picturesque region of Bergslagen. The six part series follows amateur detective Puck Ekstedt, his fiancé Einar Bure and police superintendent Christer Wijk as they attempt to uncover the murderous actions that inhabit their beautiful surroundings.Laced with intrigue, sex, betrayal, secrets and lies this new series is inspired by the popular novels of Swedish crime author Maria Lang.
Four Adventures of Reinette and Mirabelle – 18th June
Eric Rohmer’s delightful portrayal of female friendship between Reinette, a country girl, and Mirabelle, a Parisian: city girl and country girl. The first of four episodes recounts their meeting. The second centers on a café and a waiter, a difficult man ‘with attitude.’ In the third they interact with and discuss their different views on society’s ‘margins’: beggars, thieves, swindlers. And in the fourth, on a bet, Reinette, an art student, and Mirabelle succeed in selling one of Reinette’s paintings to an art dealer while Reinette pretends to be mute and Mirabelle, who affects not to know her, does all the talking.
Anno 1790 – 21st June
Anno 1790 is part mystery, part historical drama, part romance and partially a look at early forensic science. The setting is Stockholm when Europe is in turmoil a few years after the French Revolution. In wonderful period detail we meet aristocrats, functionaries, citizens eking out a living and revolutionaries intent on social change. Enter Daadh, an educated man of the Enlightenment, with one foot firmly planted in the future. He acutely observes and processes the changing world around him. He is of the Age of Reason, yet his heart usually gets the best of him.
