Steamy psychology thriller What/If has risen to number one in Netflix’s chart of most popular titles.

The series, which stars Renee Zellwegger, premiered last month to mixed reviews – read our verdict here – and notably failed to top Netflix’s weekly rankings, unlike recent new releases Dead to Me or Rim of the World.

The data is being released for the UK only, as a new experiment to see if users find the regular round-up a useful indication of what’s trending. The figures, of course, should be taken with a pinch of salt: Netflix’s count for a “viewer” is anyone who completes at least 70 per cent of one episode of a TV series or 70 per cent of a film – an indication, perhaps, of how much time people typically spend watching a single title on Netflix, or of how value attention spans have become in a competitive online age.

Nonetheless, they highlight how much of an impact each new release makes, as word of mouth builds among subscribers. That appears to the case for What/If, which has now risen to take the top spot, ahead of recently added film Baby Driver, last week’s new Netflix original movie Rim of the World, and another new Netflix original film, the romantic comedy Always Be My Maybe. Ava DuVernay’s powerful true crime drama When They See Us, another Netflix original released last week, reached six in the top 10, behind RuPaul’s Drag Race and Dead to Me.
