Walter Presents will begin the New Year with two new seasons of one of its best box sets to date: Black Widow.
The dark family saga shares elements with the Sopranos, only with an extra shot of adrenaline. It follows Carmen, a wife who finds herself drawn into the Dutch underworld, after losing her husband. The original title for the show is “Penoza”, which literally means underworld.
“Walter Presents’ English title is perhaps a more eloquent interpretation, referring not only to the suffering wife facing up to the idea of losing her husband, but also conjuring up the sticky web of dodgy deals, violent threats and double-crosses that is about entangle her – her, of course, being a deceptively lethal spider in her own right,” we wrote in our review of Season 1. “It’s that balance of reluctance and innocence and passionate determination that make Black Widow such a compelling watch, with Monic Hendrickx delivering a superb performance.”
In Season 3, her large-scale drug trade operation is a well-oiled machine and she doesn’t seem to have a thing to worry about. Life is so good she even starts to contemplate early retirement: she would like to spend more time with her family and has her hopes set on breaking free from her life of crime and making it back to the normal world. However, when one of her runners is intercepted and a competitor is enters her territory, there is nothing else she can do but get back in the game.
The show returns to All 4’s foreign-language channel after accumulating a number of accolades over its lifetime, including two Best Actress awards for Hendrickx (at the Netherlands Film Festival and Picture and Sound Awards) and Best TV Series at the De Zilveren Krulstaart Awards.
Season 3 and 4 will launch on Walter Presents on 5th January 2018.
