Vikings renewed for Season 6
27th September 2017
Vikings has been renewed for a sixth season.
The show, from creator and sole writer Michael Hirst, is a family saga that tells the remarkable tales of the lives and epic adventures of the raiders and explorers of the Dark Ages. Building to an epic battle in Season 4, the show has gotten bigger with each run, to the point where it’s now preparing to leave the direct tale of Ragnar Lothbrok behind.
“It’s that long-term ambition that has made Vikings Season 4 so impressive, even in its more uneven episodes,” we wrote in our review of the finale earlier this year. “Michael Hirst’s two-part season is the biggest the show has ever been and its time-jumps, battle omissions and character deaths have all converged here with a coherent, confident vision for a series that could run for several years to come. That clarity comes in tiny moments, such as Bjorn saying bye to his kids – a whole new generation of viking stories to tell.”
Now, History has shown its confidence in the show’s long-lasting appeal, ordering a sixth run before the fifth season has even premiered. Season 6 will last 20 episodes, continuing the series’ string of extended runs: Season 5 will air in two parts, beginning with a two-hour premiere on Amazon Prime Video UK on Thursday 30th November – within 24 hours of its US debut. Vikings Season 5 will return for two-hour premiere in November
22nd July 2017
Vikings Season 5 will officially return this November, History has announced.
The show, which airs exclusively on Amazon Prime Video in the UK, is created by Michael Hirst and tells the epic lives of the raiders and explorers of the Dark Ages.
Now, History have confirmed that it’s only a matter of months until the Vikings are back on our screens. This time, they’ll be joined by a new face: Bishop Heahmund, played by Jonathan Rhys Meyers. We get a fresh look at him in the new trailer, as he prepares to join series regulars Katheryn Winnick, Gustaf Skarsgård, Alexander Ludwig and Alex Høgh Andersen.
Season 5 begins with Ivar the Boneless (Alex Høgh Andersen) asserting his leadership over the Great Heathen Army, while Lagertha (Canadian Katheryn Winnick) reigns as Queen of Kattegat. Ivar’s murder of his brother Sigurd (David Lindström) sets the stage for vicious battles to come as Ragnar’s (Travis Fimmel) sons plot their next moves. Bjorn (B.C.-native Alexander Ludwig) follows his destiny into the Mediterranean Sea and Floki (Gustaf Skarsgård) takes to the seas submitting himself to the will of the gods. The season is “full of startling alliances and unbelievable betrayals as the Vikings fight to rule the world”, promises History.
The whole thing will kick off on Wednesday 29th November in the USA, with a two-hour opening episode.
“Vikings is about bold storytelling,” Arturo Interian, History’s SVP Scripted Programming said at the Comic-Con panel. “When Michael Hirst told us his epic plans for the season premiere, we needed two hours to tell it properly. Season Five is taking our Vikings to uncharted lands we’ve never seen on the series before.”
You can expect that feature-length premiere to arrive on Amazon Prime Video in the UK on Thursday 30th November. Here’s the Vikings Season 5 Comic-Con trailer:
