Under the Shadow will be available to watch online in the UK this weekend, following its cinema release last Friday.
The Iranian horror was one of the most buzzed-about films at Sundance this year, premiering in the festival’s Midnight Movie strand. Written and directed by first-time filmmaker Babak Anvari, it takes place in wartime 1988 and follows Shideh (Narges Rashidi) and her daughter Dorsa (Avin Manshadi), whose apartment building is hit by a missile.
Shortly after, Dorsa falls ill and her behaviour becomes increasingly disturbed. Searching for answers, Shideh learns from a superstitious neighbour that the cursed, unexploded object might have brought in djinn – malevolent spirits that travel on the wind…
The smart, subversive, supernatural thriller, which combines domestic-possession horror with a sharp feminist subtext, has already earned comparisons to breakout hits The Babadook, It Follows and A Girl Walks Home Alone At Night. It finally hit UK cinemas on Friday 30th September, riding a wave of glowing reviews. Now, it’s expanding across the country with a VOD release on Friday 7th October. That means you’ll get the best of both worlds, with the film still available in cinemas as well as in your living room. Can’t find it on the big screen? You’ll be able to buy it from pay-per-view VOD sites on Friday 7th October, including iTunes, Amazon Instant Video, Curzon Home Cinema, TalkTalk TV Store, Virgin Movies and eir Vision Movies.
You can read our review of the film here, along with a full list of where it is available to stream. Until then, here’s a trailer:
