“Cherie don’t wanna be with you more…” sing Mel and Jen on an unsuspecting man’s doorstep – and so begins your introduction to Netflix’s hilarious New Zealand comedy, The Breaker Upperers.
The film, directed and written by Jackie van Beek and Madeleine Sami, follows the two women, who run a business breaking up couples for cash. 15 years ago, Mel (Madeleine Sami) and Jen (Jackie van Beek) discovered they were being two-timed by the same man. Bitter and cynical they became fast friends and formed The Breaker Upperers, a small-time business breaking up couples for cash.
Now, they’re in their late-thirties and business is booming. They’re a platonic, codependent couple who keep their cynicism alive by not getting emotionally involved with anybody else. But when they run into an old victim, Mel develops a conscience and their friendship is truly put to the test.
The film, which had its UK premiere at the London Film Festival last year, is released online worldwide by Netflix on Friday 15th February. Here’s the trailer – or head this way for our full guide to what’s coming soon to Netflix UK in February.
