Blindspotting renewed for Season 2
David Farnor | On 15, Oct 2021
Blindspotting will return to STARZPLAY for Season 2.
Based on the film of the same name, the half-hour series is executive produced by Rafael Casal (The Good Lord Bird, Bad Education) and Daveed Diggs (Snowpiercer, Hamilton), who both starred in the film in addition to writing and producing it.
Season 1 picked up six months after the film, following Ashley, who is nipping at the heels of a middle class life in Oakland until Miles, her partner of 12 years and father of their son, is suddenly incarcerated, leaving her to navigate a chaotic and humorous existential crisis when she is forced to move in with Miles’ mother and half-sister.
The series stars Jasmine Cephas Jones (#FreeRayshawn, Hamilton) as Ashley; Benjamin Turner (recording artist) as Earl, who is fresh out of prison, wearing an ankle monitor and just trying to kill time and lay low; Candace Nicholas-Lippman (Good Trouble) as Janelle, Ashley’s close friend who’s just returned to the neighbourhood after spending many years in Bali; Jaylen Barron (Shameless, Free Reign) as Trish, Miles’ half-sister, who might be wilder than he is; Atticus Woodward (Shameless) as Sean, Ashley and Miles’ sweet, smart and energetic son; Helen Hunt (Mad About You, Twister) as Rainey, Miles’ mother who has strong opinions and holds family above all else; and Rafael Casal who reprises his role as Miles, Ashley’s ride-or-die partner of 12 years and father of their son.
Casal will return once again for Season 2 to reprise his role as Miles.
“The award-worthy artistry and creativity that Rafael, Daveed and the entire Blindspotting team poured into the series took the comedy genre to a new level and I can’t wait to see what they have in store for season two,” says Jeffrey Hirsch, President and CEO at STARZ. “The series deservedly garnered critical acclaim and is a wonderful example of our programming mandate focused on unique, authentic stories by, about and for women and underrepresented audiences.”
Casal and Diggs comment: “We are overwhelmed by the outpouring of love for Season 2, and have been hard at work for the last few months crafting the next chapter of this Bay story. We are so excited to bring the next season to life with the incredible artistry of our cast and crew, and our partners Starz and Lionsgate. They done fucked around and gave us more runway, so welcome back to the ordeal!”
