Billions will be bringing in some big changes for Season 6 – and a new trailer gives us a first look at the show’s future.
Warning: This contains spoilers for Season 5 of Billions
Created by Brian Koppelman and David Levien, the series follows District Attorney Chuck Rhoades (Paul Giamatti) and hedge fund king Bobby “Axe” Axelrod (Damian Lewis) as the two clash repeatedly in a sea of financial and political plotting.
After airing for four seasons, Season 5 was interrupted by the coronavirus pandemic last year, with the first seven episodes being broadcast before the programme went on hiatus.
“Corey Stoll is a perfect addition to the cruelly entertaining financial thriller, which pushes its characters to new emotional extremes,” we wrote in our review of Season 5, singling out its treatment of Axe: “While he’s lost of his determination to take down his enemies, for the first time we wonder whether he actually can.”
Now, hot on the heels of the Season 5 finale premiering in the USA, the show has confirmed that Axe will not return for Season 6, after Lewis’ high-flying finance whizz saw all of his fortune effectively wiped out and taken over by Stoll’s rival, Mike Prince. Season 5 ended with Axe evading arrest and settling down for a quiet life of freedom in Switzerland.
Season 6 will see Stoll promoted to a series regular, as Prince and Chuck go head to head.
Lewis tweeted this week: “A pleasure and a privilege to play Axe for 5 seasons with some of the smartest, funniest most talented cast and crew I’ve worked with. I’ll miss the Billions family. Yep, some jobs are more than just a job…. Love.”
Koppeman also tweeted: “What an incredible joy to spend five years working so closely with the great @lewis_damian! @DavidLevien and I are beyond grateful to you, Damian, for the work, of course, and the fellowship, and for all you sacrificed to come do this with us.”
Season 6 will premiere on 23rd January in the USA, which means you can expect it on Sky Atlantic in the UK on 24th January, with Prince’s right hand man Scooter (Daniel Breaker) also being promoted to a series regular. Expect new tensions and conflicts, even though the rivals may be different. Here’s the trailer:
