“A woman is at her most beautiful between the age of 35 and 39.” That’s the sound of Sofia Coppola reuniting with Bill Murray for On the Rocks, her new film for Apple TV+.
20 years on from her debut, The Virgin Suicides, On the Rocks sees Coppola turn her gaze on 30-something life. The film follows a young New York mother and writer (Rashida Jones) who is faced with sudden doubts about her marriage. And so she teams up with her larger-than-life playboy father (Bill Murray) to tail her husband (Marlon Wayans).
Written and directed by Coppola, and marking a reunion between the helmer and her Lost in Translation star, the film is a bittersweet comedy about relationships. It marks the first film to come out of Apple’s partnership with studio A24, and continues Apple’s major push into original movies, having signed first-look deals with Martin Scorsese and Leonardo DiCaprio’s production companies, released Tom Hanks’ Greyhound, and acquired new films from Jake Gyllenhaal, Werner Herzog and Justin Timberlake.
It will be released this October on Apple TV+. Here’s the trailer:
