Aziz Ansari is returning to our screens this summer with a new Netflix comedy special.
The comedian and actor, known for Parks and Recreation and Master of None, became known for something else entirely in 2017, when he was surrounded by controversy, because of his alleged sexual misconduct.
An article on Babe.net, titled “I went on a date with Aziz Ansari. It turned into the worst night of my life”, detailed the account of a woman who went on a date with him and alleged that he coerced her into sexual activity, ignoring her verbal and emotional cues of discomfort.
Ansari responded with a statement saying he was “surprised and concerned” to learn of her discomfort. The article sparked a debate online about the importance of consent and the boundaries between a bad date and sexual misconduct.
Since then, Ansari has kept a low profile, but in summer 2019, he will be making a return to Netflix. Aziz Ansari: Right Now, directed by Spike Jonze, will premiere on 9th July. The special was recorded during his recent Road to Nowhere tour.
Vulture reports that he has previously spoken out at a gig in New York about the allegations.
“It’s a terrifying thing to talk about,” he was quoted as saying. “There were times I felt really upset and humiliated and embarrassed, and ultimately I just felt terrible this person felt this way.”
Aziz Ansari: Right Now is available on Netflix UK, as part of an £9.99 monthly subscription.
