Too Old to Die Young will not return for Season 2, Amazon has confirmed.
The series, created by Nicolas Winding Refn, explores the criminal underbelly of Los Angeles across 10 often 90-minute episodes. The drama charts the existential journey of several characters, as they transform from killers to samurais. It stars Miles Teller, John Hawkes, Jena Malone and William Baldwin.
Amazon premiered two episodes – the fourth and fifth – at Cannes earlier this year, before the whole thing landed online on Amazon Prime Video in June.
“Refn’s imagination is a dark place, but it‘s rewarding for those who brave the path,” we wrote in our review of all 10 episodes. “Folk will undoubtedly be put off by the sordid story, the grotesque misogyny of the male characters, the (incorrect) feeling they’ve been had by a jokester auteur, and a protagonist who, like Andrew Garfield’s brilliant performance in Under the Silver Lake, isn’t exactly a figure to root for. But how incredible is it that Nicolas Winding Refn got Amazon to finance what is essentially a 13-hour art film?l”
“The filmmaker skewers misogyny, male entitlement and toxic masculinity, much like David Robert Mitchell’s misunderstood psycho drama did, but it might take a while for viewers to catch up,” we added.
Amazon, however, has confirmed at its recent TCA press event that it has no plans for a second season.
Amazon Studios chief Jennifer Salke told the press that while some journalists in attendance said Amazon had buried the series on its Prime homepage, the show was pushed heavily in Europe, where Refn’s core fan base lives.
“We’re happy with the show and I’ve been texting with Nic Refn this week,” she said.
