The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel swept the 2019 SAG Awards last night, winning all three of the big acting prices for TV. Amazon’s show, which follows housewife Midge Maisel as she moves from an unhappy marriage to a surprising career as a stand-up comedian, won Best Actress in a Comedy for Rachel Brosnahan and Best Actor in a Comedy for Tony Shalhoub – beating Michael Douglas, who won the Golden Globe in the same category for Netflix’s The Kominsky Method. Then, it went the whole hog and won Best Comedy Ensemble to boot, cementing the golden touch of creator Amy Sherman-Palladino, who previously gave the world Gilmore Girls.
It has previously won two Golden Globes, one for Best Comedy Series and one for Best Performance for Brosnahan. The show’s SAG success marked a triumphant might for Amazon, while Netflix walked away with two prizes: its main contender, Ozark, bagged Best Actor in a Drama for Jason Bateman, while GLOW won Outstanding Stunt Ensemble.
Darren Criss won Best Actor in a Miniseries for Assassination of Gianni Versace, while Patricia Arquette won Best Female Actor in a Miniseries for HBO’s Sharp Objects. The show was stolen, though, by Sandra Oh, who delivered an emotional speeech upon accepting the price for Best Actress in the BBC’s Killing Eve.
On the movie side of the awards, Black Panther emerged as the crowd-pleasing winner, crowned Best Ensemble Cast and Best Stunt Ensemble. Rami Malek and Glenn Close, meanwhile, continued their awards season momentum with Best Actor for Bohemian Rhapsody and Best Actress for The Wife respectively. Mahershala Ali won Best Supporting Actor for Green Book, while Emily Blunt won Best Supporting Actress for A Quiet Place.
