“This… is a murder.” That’s the sound of Chris Miller and Phil Lord (The LEGO Movie, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, 21 Jump Street) turning the murder mystery on its head in new Apple TV+ series The Afterparty.
The eight-episode comedy centres on a murder mystery at a high school reunion. Each of the eight episodes features a retelling of the same night told through a different character’s perspective, each with its own visual style and genre to match the teller’s personality.
Writer, producer and performer Anthony King (Search Party, Dead to Me) will executive produce, while Lord Miller’s SVP of Television Aubrey Lee is a producer on the series. In front of the camera will be Tiffany Haddish, Sam Richardson, Zoe Chao, Ben Schwartz, Ike Barinholtz, Ilana Glazer, Jamie Demetriou, Dave Franco and John Early.
You can see them in action on Friday 28th January, when the first three episodes premiere on Apple TV+ – with the remaining five episodes arriving weekly.

Trailer: The Afterparty kicks off on Apple TV+ in January
7th October 2021
Apple TV+ today debuted the teaser trailer for its new murder mystery comedy The Afterparty – and the video gives us a glimpse of what might be the most inventive and surprising show of 2022.
From Chris Miller and Phil Lord (The LEGO Movie, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, 21 Jump Street), the eight-episode series centres on a murder mystery at a high school reunion. Each of the eight episodes features a retelling of the same night told through a different character’s perspective, each with its own unique visual style and film genre to match the teller’s personality.
Starting out as a movie 10 years ago, it’s something of a passion project for Miller, who will serve as showrunner as well as directing and exec-producing.
Writer, producer and performer Anthony King (Search Party, Dead to Me) will also executive produce, while Lord Miller’s SVP of Television Aubrey Lee is a producer on the series. The behind the scenes talent includes director of photography Carl Herse (The Last Man on Earth, Black Monday”), production designer Bruce Hill (The Last Man on Earth, It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia), costume designer Trayce Gigi Field (Barb and Star Go to Vista del Mar, Dead to Me), composer Daniel Pemberton (The Trial of the Chicago 7, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse), and editor Joel Negron (Thor: Ragnarok, 21 Jump Street).
The names in front of the camera are equally impressive, including Tiffany Haddish, Sam Richardson, Zoe Chao, Ben Schwartz, Ike Barinholtz, Ilana Glazer, Jamie Demetriou, Dave Franco and John Early.
“This is one of the most surprising, original and fun projects we’ve ever made,” said Lord and Miller. “Our goal was to tell a comedic whodunnit story in a new and exciting way. By giving each episode its own unique style of storytelling, we were able to make what feels like eight distinctly different but interconnected films that highlight how everyone’s personal perspective and biases shape how they see the world.”
The series will premiere in January, with an exact date yet to be confirmed.
Tiffany Haddish, Jamie Demetriou, Ben Schwartz join Apple’s The Afterparty
12th November 2020
Apple TV+ is inviting a whole host of stars to The Afterparty, its new murder-mystery comedy.
The series, created by Chris Miller and Phil Lord, is set at a high school reunion afterparty. Each of the eight episodes will feature a retelling of the same night told through a different character’s perspective, each with its own unique visual format and film genre to match the teller’s personality.
The project was picked up by Apple this year, as part of its growing push into original comedy, and while Miller and Lord’s names are eye-catching enough, after 21 Jump Street and The LEGO Movie, the tech giant has wasted no time in assembling a star-studded ensemble in front of the camera.
Tiffany Haddish (Girls Trip), Ben Schwartz (Space Force, House of Lies), Dave Franco (The Disaster Artist) and Jamie Demetriou (Stath Lets Flats, Fleabag) have all joined the show, along with Sam Richardson (Tomorrow War, Veep), Zoë Chao (Love Life, Downhill), Ike Barinholtz (The Mindy Project, Neighbors), Ilana Glazer (Broad City) and John Early (Search Party).
Richardson is Aniq, a loveable escape room designer who hopes to reconnect with his high school crush, Zoe. Chao is Zoe, a former artist turned school administrator who is newly separated from her high school sweetheart. Schwartz will play Yasper, Aniq’s relentlessly positive best friend who dreams of a career in music. Barinholtz will portray Brett, Zoe’s ex-husband, an arrogant, former high school athlete. Glazer will play Chelsea, the former high school valedictorian and class president. Franco will portray Xavier, once a dorky high school drama student, now a famous pop star and actor. Demetriou is Walt, who was ignored throughout high school and hopes to be remembered this time. Haddish will play Detective Danner, assigned to solve the case, with Early playing Danner’s eager partner, Detective Culp.
The Afterparty: Apple TV+ orders comedy from Chris Miller and Phil Lord
26th June 2020
Apple TV+ has ordered The Afterparty, a new comedy series from Chris Miller and Phil Lord.
The Academy Award, BAFTA and Golden Globe Award-winning duo have been behind a number of notable comedy hits in recent years, not only The LEGO Movie but also 21 Jump Street and 22 Jump Street. In a competitive situation, Apple has given a straight-to-series order for their new comedy series.
The Afterparty is a murder-mystery comedy set at a high school reunion afterparty. Each of the eight episodes will feature a retelling of the same night told through a different character’s perspective, each with its own unique visual format and film genre to match the teller’s personality.
Miller will serve as creator, showrunner and executive producer and Lord will executive produce through the pair’s production shingle, Lord Miller. Lord Miller’s VP of Television Aubrey Lee will serve as producer. The series will be produced for Apple by TriStar TV and Sony Pictures Television, where Lord and Miller currently have an expansive five-year overall television deal.
The new Apple original comedy series joins a growing slate of original comedies, including Dickinson, Mythic Quest: Raven’s Banquet, Central Park, Trying and the upcoming Ted Lasso.
