SXSW: Mailchimp and Oscilloscope release shorts online
It’s been only a few weeks since SXSW was cancelled due to safety concerns surrounding the spread of the coronavirus. When the City of Austin scrapped the festival for 2020, not only were fans left disappointed but hundreds of filmmakers lost the opportunity for their work to be seen.
The festival had curated 119 Shorts including 22 Music Videos, 12 Episodic Premieres, 7 Special Events, 14 Episodic Pilots in 2 curated programs, 30 Title Design Entries, and 27 Virtual Cinema Projects. Now, at least some of them have found a home, with Mailchimp and Oscilloscope Laboratories teaming up to create a digital home for the festival’s sizeable slate of short films.
“SXSW has long been a champion of independent filmmakers, and premiering a short film at the festival is a one-of-a-kind opportunity for creators to share their vision with the world,” said the companies in a statement.
“While we can’t replace the camaraderie of the SXSW festival, watching these films is a way to support the artists you love and connect to the world around you, during a time when we could all use a little more connection.”
The 75 short films will be available to stream for free for at least the coming month at mailchimp.com/presents/sxsw.
The move comes as SXSW announces its prizes for the festival, even though the event didn’t take place. That gives you an immediate way into the collection of short films. Here’s the list of prize-winning shorts:
