Today sees the launch of Star on Disney+, a new adults-only section of the streaming service that gives a home to films and TV shows from ABC Signature, 20th Century Studios, 20th Television, FX Productions and more.
Star went live this morning with four original titles that premiered on Hulu in the US last year, including crime thriller Big Sky from David E Kelley (Big Little Lies, The Undoing); Love, Simon spin-off series Love, Victor written by the film’s original writers Isaac Aptaker (This Is Us) and Elizabeth Berger (This Is Us); adult animated sitcom Solar Opposites, co-created by Justin Roiland (Rick & Morty) and Mike McMahan (ex-writer’s assistant on Rick & Morty); and Marvel’s Helstrom, executive produced by Paul Zbyszewski along with Karim Zreik and Jeph Loeb.
Disney has 35 first-run series lined up premiere by the end of Star’s first year, with three new originals confirmed today. The spin-off of black-ish and critically acclaimed hit series grown-ish, starring Yara Shahidi, will debut on Disney+ in April; Krista Vernoff’s Rebel, inspired by the life of Erin Brockovich, featuring Katey Sagal, Andy Garcia and John Corbett, will be released in May; and National Geographic’s highly anticipated 8-part limited series Genius: Aretha, exploring the life of the universally acclaimed Queen of Soul starring Cynthia Erivo, will debut in June.
Disney+ has also commissioned 10 new original series from across Europe, which you can read about here.
