Shakespeare 400: What Shakespeare films are available on Netflix UK, Amazon Prime Video and other SVOD services?
David Farnor | On 21, Apr 2016
With Saturday 23rd April marking the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare’s death, the UK is going into overdrive celebrating the Bard. The BBC is hosting a string of streaming events on the big day, while the BFI is holding a nationwide set of screenings, including Richard Loncraine’s Richard III on Thursday 28th April, followed by a live Q&A with Ian McKellen beamed into cinemas across the country.
But what if you just want to curl up on the sofa and stream some Shakespeare in the living room? The UK’s SVOD services are here to help, with a range of film adaptations, from Baz Luhrmann’s Romeo + Juliet and West Side Story to Hamlet, The Lion King and Throne of Blood.
MUBI is leading the way with a dedicated mini-Olivier season to celebrating the Bard’s anniversary, while Sky Arts – also available to contract-free NOW subscribers – has a host of recordings from Shakespeare’s Globe for purists.
