Russell Howard stand-up special heads to Netflix
6th August 2017
Russell Howard is heading to Netflix for a new stand-up comedy special.
The streaming service has increasingly stepped up its stand-up game in recent years, signing a wealth of big US names to step behind the mic and stream their jokes for subscribers. A growing list of British talent is following suit, from Jimmy Carr and Katherine Ryan to Frankie Boyle and Bridget Christie.
Now, Russell Howard is joining the club. The comedian first rose to fame as a regular on the BBC panel show Mock the Week, but has since gone on to his own projects, including Russell Howard’s Good News on the BBC and Russell Howard & Mum: USA Road Trip on Sky.
He announced the news on Twitter, in between travelling round the world on his current sell-out tour – called, funnily enough, “Round the World”. The special will be recorded in 4K on the final dates on his tour, as Howard heads to Brighton for two last gigs at the Brighton Dome.
There is no guarantee that “Round the World” will be name of the final recording: Netflix will often change the name of each show to something different. When you’re entering a deal that gives you international reach to an audience that is already demonstrably global, though, the title is likely to be far from the top of Russell’s list of worries.
“I’m really looking forward to making a special for Netflix,” Howard said in a statement. “I’ve enjoyed watching so many of their stand-up specials, and to record my own for them is great.”
The special will be directed by TV Burp’s Peter Orton, with Avalon producing and Howard exec-producing, alongside Netflix’s Lisa Nishimura and Robbie Praw.
It will be released on Netflix worldwide later this year.
