RuPaul’s Drag Race UK has been renewed for a third season, with the doors opening for applications to the series.
A global phenomenon, the RuPaul’s Drag Race franchise is available in 193 countries and has been nominated in the US for a record-breaking 29 Emmys with 13 wins. The first season of the UK incarnation saw Baga Chipz, Blu Hydrangea, Crystal, Cheryl Hole, Divina De Campo, Gothy Kendoll, Sum Ting Wong, Scaredy Kat, The Vivienne and Vinegar Strokes all compete to be crowned the UK’s first Drag Race Superstar.
The result was a runway success on BBC Three, with 15.6 million requests on iPlayer to date and two-thirds of the audience aged 16 to 34. It was the most popular BBC Three entertainment programme since the channel moved online in 2016 and even delivered a top ten single for The Frock Destroyers.
Season 2 was swiftly commissioned, with RuPaul Charles, Michelle Visage, Graham Norton and Alan Carr all returning to our screens. It will be bigger than Season 1, with 12 queens battling it out.
Now, as that prepares to air in early 2021, BBC Three is opening up the application process once more for Season 3, in search of yet another fine set of fabulous queens to compete in the Olympics of Drag.
RuPaul says: “Looking forward to better days! I’m happy to announce the triumphant return of “RuPaul’s Drag Race UK. Early in 2021, Season 2 will arrive with all the hope, joy, laughter and glitter you’ve come to expect from our brilliant queens. We’re also currently casting Season 3 with the best and the brightest Great Britain has to offer. We feel honored that you’ve embraced our little show, and our only wish is that we can offer a smile at a time when we can all use it the most.”
The renewal comes as BBC Three continues to expand its partnership with producers World of Wonder, ordering three spin-off shows in recent months, including a fly-on-the-wall docuseries God Shave the Queens and Michelle Visage’s series Get Off Your Ass, plus How’s Your Head, Hun?, a lockdown talk show from the Drag Race veteran.
