Netflix has finally dropped the full trailer for After Life Season 2, which arrives on our screens later this month.
Created by and starring Ricky Gervais, the comedy-drama follows Tony (Ricky Gervais), a writer for the local newspaper in a small town whose life is upended after his wife dies from cancer. In Season 2, whilst still struggling with immense grief for his wife, we see Tony try to become a better friend to those around him. Each grappling with their own problems and only to be intensified by the looming threat of the local newspaper being shut down.
“I was blown away by the reaction to season one,” says Gervais. “I’ve never experienced anything quite like it! It’s been truly heart-warming to see how the show has resonated with so many viewers on an emotional level. I can’t wait for everyone to see season 2 where hope is everything.”
The six-part series, which co-stars Penelope Wilton (Downton Abbey, Doctor Who), David Bradley (The Harry Potter series, Game of Thrones), Ashley Jensen (Extras), Tom Basden (Plebs, David Brent: Life On The Road), Tony Way (Edge of Tomorrow), David Earl (Cemetery Junction, Derek), Joe Wilkinson (Him and Her), Kerry Godliman (Derek), Mandeep Dhillon, Jo Hartley, Roisin Conaty and Diane Morgan (David Brent: Life On The Road), premieres on 24th April.

Netflix confirms After Life Season 2
3rd April 2019
Netflix has officially confirmed that After Life will return for a second season.
The comedy-drama follows Tony, a man trying to cope with his wife’s death. When Lisa suddenly passes away, Tony changes. He decides to live long enough to punish the world by saying and doing whatever he likes – a superpower of not caring that turns out to be tricky when everyone is trying to save the nice guy they used to know.
Within weeks of the show’s premiere last month, Gervais announced that he was working on a follow-up. Now, Netflix has confirmed that the green light has been given for a sophomore outing.
Ted Sarandos, Chief Content Officer, says: “After Life has moved audiences from laughter to tears around the world and we are thrilled to announce that Ricky Gervais will be back with a second season on Netflix. We are so proud to play host to Ricky’s brilliant stand up comedy, specials, original films and series and join in the joy of the fans with his latest hit.”
Gervais adds: “I have never had a reaction like this before. It’s been insane. And heartwarming. But now I have to make sure the second season is even better so I’ll probably have to work much harder than usual. Annoying really.”
After Life is created, written and directed by Gervais, who serves as exec-producer alongside Duncan Hayes, and produced by Charlie Hanson.

The show premiered on Friday 8th March – and now, within a month of that premiere, the comic has confirmed that he’s working on a follow-up.
“Thanks again for all the love for #AfterLife. I have never had a reaction like this. The reviews have been great but the response from viewers has been fucking amazing,” he tweeted yesterday. “And that means so much more to me. You are the best fans in the world. Oh, and I’ve started writing series 2.”
The streaming giant hasn’t yet confirmed a renewal, but Gervais has previously tweeted about a second season.
“Once again, I have to thank you from the bottom of my heart for all your amazing tweets about #AfterLife,” he commented last week. “I’ve never had a reaction like it. I have a spring in my step as I skip towards writing series 2.”
He has also said to the press that he has been thinking about a second season, “because I fell in love with the characters”.
“I’ve got an idea of where it can go. And the second series is always better, usually because you know the actors [when you’re writing for them].”
As for what a second season might look like, Gervais teased “a little” clue about where the direction of the series in his final scene between Tony and Ann, played by Penelope Wilton.
“I’m gonna carry on saying and doing what I want, and punishing the world, but I’m gonna punish people who deserve it. I’m gonna use my superpower for good,” Tony tells her.
After Life is available on Netflix UK, as part of an £9.99 monthly subscription.
