Peaky Blinders Season 5 gets August air date
David Farnor | On 09, Aug 2019
Peaky Blinders Season 5 finally has a UK release date, with the drama officially returning to BBC One this August.
The hit crime family saga, written and created by Steven Knight, has become a cult phenomenon since launching in 2013. It stars Cillian Murphy as Thomas Shelby, a crime boss in Birmingham during the 1920s. The show picks up in Season 5 with Tommy elected as MP for Birmingham South, but with the Wall Street Crash on the horizon and Tommy’s personal state far from stable, the future promises to be as dark and dramatic as ever.
Murphy is joined this season by Sam Claflin (The Hunger Games) and Anya Taylor-Joy (The Miniaturist, Split, The Witch), with Brian Gleeson (Phantom Thread, Logan Lucky) and Neil Maskell (Happy New Year, Colin Burstead, In Darkness) also in the cast.
You can see them all in action on the show’s new home of BBC One at 9pm on Sunday 25th August. The BBC announced the air date this morning, along with this new image from photographer Robert Viglasky. (Read on below for the trailer.)

Peaky Blinders to move to BBC One for Season 5
26th August 2018
What do Peaky Blinders and The Great British Bake Off have in common? Both have been so popular that they’ve made the jump from BBC Two to BBC One.
The hit series, written and created by Steven Knight and produced by Caryn Mandabach Productions and Tiger Aspect Productions has become a cult phenomenon since launching in 2013. It’s played a key part in the incredible resurgence of drama on the channel over the last five years.
It stars Cillian Murphy as Thomas Shelby, a crime boss in Birmingham during the 1920s. It fourth season was the best performing so far and BBC Two’s top drama of 2017, attracting an average consolidated audience of 3.3m – almost 1 million more than series three.
With audiences growing with each season, no doubt helped by its availability on Netflix as a box set for catching up, the Beeb has now decided to bump the Blinders up a grade to a BBC One primetime slot. The news was announced at the Edinburgh TV Festival this week.
Charlotte Moore, Director of BBC Content, said: “Peaky Blinders is world class drama at the top of its game and the time has arrived for it to move to the UK’s biggest channel. Steven Knight’s epic storytelling is authentic and utterly compelling and I want to give it the chance to be enjoyed by an even broader audience on BBC One. We couldn’t have asked for a better response to series four and the impact it had with young audiences. This move will also give BBC Two more creative headroom to experiment with new drama.”
Steven Knight, Writer and Executive Producer, added: “I am thrilled that our precious Peaky Blinders is moving to BBC One. Peaky is a show nurtured and grown by the audience who have found us through word of mouth. Hopefully this move will help us reach even more people.”
Caryn Mandabach, Executive Producer, Caryn Mandabach Productions, commented: “Peaky Blinders has touched the minds and hearts of everyone who’s watched it and we are honoured to bring a whole new audience with us as we move our merry gang to BBC One for the next series.”
When Season 5 will air is not yet clear, but we do know that filming is set for this autumn and we will have to wait until 2019 to see the end result. Knight, meanwhile, has previously confirmed that the plan is to end with Season 7, as Birmingham hears its first air raid siren in 1939.
Need to catch up? Season 1 to 3 of Peaky Blinders are available on Netflix UK.
