Years before Jackie was nominated for three Oscars ad No and Neruda were up for Golden Globes, Chilean director Pablo Larraín directed a TV series in his home country. Now, Fugitives (or “Profugos”), is finally headed to UK screens.
The crime thriller, which was originally made for HBO Latino, follows four men whose lives are turned upside down when a drug deal goes drastically wrong.
The series opens with the quartet embarking on the high-risk operation, smuggling a petrol tanker of liquid cocaine across the border from Bolivia. When the operation catastrophically unravels, they are forced to go on the run. Despite hardly knowing each other and having little in common, their only hope of survival is staying together, as they escape pursuit from every direction.
The fast-moving thriller lasted two seasons and was nominated for an International Emmy in 2014. Three years later, All 4’s Walter Presents has snapped up the rights to the show, making it the first Chilean programme to be broadcast in the UK.
The 13-episode first season boasts an all-star cast that includes multi-award winning Néstor Cantillana, with Larraín helming the opener and Jonathan Jakubowicz also directing an episode. Larraín’s first episode will air on Channel 4 on 20th September, with episodes then available for free on All 4’s Walter Presents after broadcast.
