First look: The opening minute of Orange Is the New Black Season 5
11th April 2017
It’s hard to believe it’s been almost a year since Orange Is the New Black Season 4. How can you tell? Because our hearts have only just stopped racing after that finale – and, just when you thought it was safe to start breathing again, Netflix has given us our first look at Season 5.
The 60-second clip from the premiere episode takes us right back into the explosive climax of Season 4 – and things are only set to get more intense, with Season 5 set to take place in real-time over the course of three days.
Spoilers for Season 4 follow
For those who have repressed their memories of the traumatic close of Season 4, it ended with an explosive riot sparked by Poussey’s untimely death combined with the rage and grief felt by the inmates. Things quickly escalated into utter chaos, coming to a head with a determined Daya now in possession of a gun – and it becomes clear that, no matter what the outcome, life at Litchfield will never be the same.
After the riot, in which the inmates gain control of the prison, Season 5 will see their lives forever changed, as they are emboldened to fight for redemption, resolution and the respect they deserve.
All episodes of Season 5 will debut on Friday 9th June on Netflix. Here’s the new video:
Orange Is the New Black Season 5 to premiere on 9th June
8th February 2017
Orange Is the New Black Season 5 will premiere on Friday 9th June, Netflix has announced.
Yes, the ladies of Litchfied will return once again – something that will not surprise fans of Jenji Kohan’s prison drama. The show was renewed last year for a whopping three more seasons, taking its total all the way up to seven.
Given the events of Season 4, though, it’s safe to say that nothing will be the same again on Netflix’s drama, with anything possible in the coming season, let alone the two that will follow.
“Netflix’s series has gone from villains such as Vee to have a Big Bad that is the prison system itself – a system that’s corrupt and flawed on both sides,” we wrote in our review of Season 4’s moving, powerful finale. “When you’re in prison, the show perhaps suggests, it’s not possible (or maybe it seems there’s no point) in visualising any other alternative. Time travel doesn’t exist. And time is how these inmates are all defined, how they measure their existence. They’ve all got time, but that time is changing them, for better or for worse. As the finale’s title puts it, Toast Can’t Never Be Bread Again.”
