Better Call Saul Season 2 is only nine days away, but AMC and Netflix have kept details about the show’s second run largely under wraps. Now, though, that’s beginning to change with our first glimpses of what’s in store.
Netflix has released a new poster for the Breaking Bad spin-off’s return, which sees Bob Odenkirk’s Jimmy McGill sitting on a courtroom bench in a dazzling, Inception-like composition. But before you start wondering Saul’s about to pull a Leonardo DiCaprio and delve into people’s dreams, Netflix has also unveiled its first official synopsis for the new season. Here it is:
The Season 1 finale found Jimmy walking away from a lucrative job offer, vowing to Mike Ehrmantraut that his days of playing the game straight are over. Season 2 of Better Call Saul follows the twists and turns of Jimmy’s journey toward becoming his Breaking Bad alter ego, along the way soaring to new heights and sinking to new lows. Jimmy grows closer to confidante Kim Wexler, while his relationship with afflicted brother Chuck McGill becomes increasingly complex. Mike finds himself pulled deeper into the criminal underworld. As Jimmy evolves (or regresses) towards “it’s all good man,” he’s faced with impossible choices that foreshadow his future. Backstories are further revealed, along with new characters and nods to the Breaking Bad universe.
It doesn’t give us much to go on, but it confirms that Kim will be playing a bigger role this season. Indeed, Rhea Seahorn reprises her role as Wexler, alongside Patrick Fabian as Howard Hamlin, Michael Mando as Nacho Vargam Jonathan Banks as Mike Ehrmantraut and Michael McKean as Chuck McGill.
Vince Gilligan and writer/producer Peter Gould also return as co-showrunners. Gilligan has also been letting some details slip. Talking to EW he revealed that Season 2 of Better Call Saul is “all about what people are willing to do for the things that they care about”.
“What does that show about you? What gets to your heart? And along with that, how far are you willing to go for the things that you care about personally, and what is that going to mean to everybody else? That theme certainly is a big part of Jimmy’s world, and one of the things that we had clarify for ourselves at the beginning of the season is what Jimmy really cares about at the beginning of Season 2.”
“It impacts Mike Ehrmentraut, played by Jonathan Banks, and the things that he cares about leads him down some very dark paths,” Gilligan added.
Gilligan also talked about one of the new characters referred to earlier: Clifford, played by Ed Begley Jr.
“Of course, he’s a comedy legend but he’s also an incredibly powerful dramatic actor,” said Gilligan. “He plays a character who is an authority figure who has the power to make many of Jimmy’s dreams come true, if Jimmy can only play ball.”
Season 2 of Better Call Saul starts on Netflix UK on Tuesday 16th February, with new episodes arriving every Tuesday morning, with 24 hours of their US broadcast.
