Netflix has released new images for Sense8.
The VOD service’s new original project is only a month away, but the sci-fi series from The Wachowskis and Babylon 5 creator J. Michael Straczynski has been kept largely under wraps until recently. Now, though, we’ve got a closer look at the show, with 18 new photos.
Semse8 follows eight strangers around the world, who experience a violent vision followed by the ability to connect with each other’s thoughts, actions and emotions. Suddenly, these people must piece together how and why this happened before a mysterious organisation hunts them down and destroys them.
The international epic was shot on location in Nairobi, Chicago, Reykjavik, Seoul, Berlin, Mumbai, Mexico City and London.
Other members of the team include German director Tom Tykwer, who co-directed the Wachowskis’ 2012 epic, Cloud Atlas, and directed the Sense8 scenes shot in Berlin and Nairobi. V for Vendetta and Ninja Assassin director James McTeigue directed the scenes shot in Mumbai and Mexico City.
Sense8’s Oscar-nominated director of photography, John Toll, previously worked with the Wachowskis on Jupiter Ascending and Cloud Atlas. Production designer Hugh Bateup has worked alongside them since the first Matrix film, and composers Ethan Stoller and Johnny Kilmek have a history of collaborating with them, too.
Another member of the crew, Dan Glass, directed several scenes and serves as the series’ visual effects supervisor. Glass’ work has been seen in acclaimed films including The Tree of Life and The Master, and he has headed visual effects for every Wachowski film since The Matrix Reloaded.
The series has an equally global list of stars, with a cast that includes: Doctor Who’s Freema Agyeman; Brian J. Smith as a Chicago police officer; Tuppence Middleton as Riley, an up-and-coming Icelandic DJ; Aml Ameen as Capheus, a young and determined bus driver who needs medicine for his mother; Bae Doona as Sun, a Seoul businesswoman with surprising secrets; Miguel Angel Silvestre as Lito, a successful and closeted actor; Tina Desai as Kala, a woman poised to marry a man she does not love; Max Riemelt as a conflicted man with a criminal past in Berlin; Jamie Clayton as Nomi a transgender woman in San Francisco; and Daryl Hannah as “an otherworldly figure named Angel”.
As Jonas, Lost’s Naveen Andrews portrays a determined and inscrutable man who tries to bring the eight strangers together.
