Godzilla anime gets January Netflix release date

Godzilla fans won’t have long to wait to enjoy the iconic kaiju’s latest big screen outing, as Japan’s new anime arrives on Netflix this month.
The feature-length animation promises an epic re-imagining of the Godzilla world of the future. It was released in Japanese cinemas by Toho and now, following a deal last year between the company and Netflix, it will be available to stream worldwide from 17th January.
The anime is produced by leading anime studio Polygon Pictures (Knights of Sidonia), directed by Kobun Shizuno (Knights of Sidonia,) and Hiroyuki Seshita (AJIN: Demi-Human), and written by acclaimed anime writer Gen Urobuchi (Psycho-Pass, Madoka Magika). A star-studded voice cast have brought the film to life, led by Yuki Kaji (Attack on Titan, AJIN: Demi-Human), Takahiro Sakurai (AJIN: Demi-Human, BLAME!), Tomokazu Sugita (Metal Gear Solid Peace Walker, Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure), Junichi Suwabe (Nodame Cantabile, Prince of Tennis), Kana Hanazawa (BLAME!, Psycho-Pass) and Mamoru Miyano (AJIN: Demi-Human, The Seven Deadly Sins).
Toho made the release date announcement on Twitter via the film’s official account, where this snazzy new poster was also unveiled:

Netflix captures Godzilla anime for global release

Netflix has managed to capture none other than Godzilla for a new original anime.
The film, which is the first-ever high quality animation of the iconic global monster franchise, promises an epic re-imagining of the Godzilla world of the future. It will have its exclusive premiere on Netflix worldwide this year, following a Toho theatrical release in Japan.
To bring to life Godzilla’s latest adaptation, Toho is working with leading Japanese anime studio Polygon Pictures (Knights of Sidonia), directors Kobun Shizuno (Knights of Sidonia,), and Hiroyuki Seshita (AJIN: Demi-Human) with a screenplay from acclaimed anime writer Gen Urobuchi (Psycho-Pass, Madoka Magika).
“We’re looking forward to bringing a spectacular entertainment experience for both existing fans of Godzilla and people new to the franchise,” says Kobun Shibuno.
Hiroyuki Seshita adds: “I’m thrilled to collaborate with two very talented colleagues, Mr. Gen Urobuchi and Director Kobun Shizuno to bring to life a unique vision of a universal human drama set in an epic world.”
Urobuchi comments: “I am very honored to join this Godzilla project as one of its Japanese creators. I’m grateful for all the support and really excited to bringing this content to fans worldwide.”

Godzilla is the latest addition to a growing slate of Netflix’s exclusive and original anime content. Others include AJIN: Demi-Human, Kuromukuro, Magi: Adventure of Sinbad, Blame!, Gantz: O, Little Witch Academia, Cyborg 009 Call of Justice and Perfect Bones.
