“I haven’t got that level of applause since I agreed to leave an airplane.” That’s the sound of Girls5eva getting back together for a third season – and a trailer gives us a first look at their return to our screens.
From creator and executive producer Meredith Scardino (Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt) and starring Sara Bareilles (Waitress: The Musical), Renée Elise Goldsberry (Hamilton), Paula Pell (Saturday Night Live, A.P. Bio) and Busy Philipps (Freaks and Geeks), the comedy follows the one-hit-wonder girl group from the 90s who reunite to give their pop star dreams one more shot.
Originally a Peacock original show, the series was picked up by Netflix after Peacock cancelled the programme. Season 3 will see Girls5eva reunited to record a new album, Returnity.
With no plan, tour manager, or venues secured, the ladies pile into a van and hit the great unknown, doing their damnedest to promote their album and get back on top. In the process, Girls5eva will grapple with life on the road, see their relationships tested, play a billionaire’s birthday party, sow their oats, confront parents they believe held them back, cross paths with the biggest pop star on the planet, and question if they really want “the big time” again. Will Girls5eva fast-track their comeback and sell their tour documentary in the process? Or will the road destroy them?
Find out on 14th March, when Season 3 premieres on Netflix. Until then, here’s the trailer – what are you waiting five?
Girls5eva Season 3 set for March release
13th December 2023
Girls5eva will return to Netflix in March for its third season.
Originally a Peacock original show, the series is a comedy about a one-hit-wonder girl group from the 90s who reunite to give their pop star dreams one more shot. They may be grown women balancing spouses, kids, jobs, aging parents, and debt, but can‘t they also be Girls5eva?
From creator and executive producer Meredith Scardino (Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt) and starring Sara Bareilles (Waitress: The Musical), Renée Elise Goldsberry (Hamilton), Paula Pell (Saturday Night Live, A.P. Bio) and Busy Philipps (Freaks and Geeks), the show was snapped up by Netflix after Peacock cancelled the drama, with Seasons 1 and 2 arriving on Netflix alongside the third season.
Season 3 will see Girls5eva reunited to record a new album, Returnity. So it’s time for the next logical step: a comeback tour.
All six episodes will premiere on Thursday 14th March, alongside all the previous episodes.
Netflix picks up Girls5eva for Season 3
28th October 2023
Girls5eva is getting back together for a third season, but they’re headed to the new home of Netflix, after being cancelled by NBC’s Peacock.
Originally a Peacock original show, the series is a comedy about a one-hit-wonder girl group from the 90s who reunite to give their pop star dreams one more shot. The series is produced by Tina Fey and created by Meredith Scardino, with Jeff Richmond and Robert Carlock also serving as exec-producers. With all of them working on Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, which was picked up by Netflix, and with Tracey Pakosta – Netflix’s head of comedy – previously based at NBC, there were just enough elements in tune to strike the right chord for the show’s renewal.
“This note-perfect girl group comedy doesn’t miss a beat,” we wrote in our review of the series, which ran for two seasons before NBC decided not to commission a third.
Netflix’s deal will bring the first two seasons of the show to the platform, so they stream on both Peacock and Netflix, with stars Sara Bareilles, Renée Elise Goldsberry, Paula Pell and Busy Philipps all returning to reprise their role for the new season.
“Our deepest thanks to Peacock for bringing Girls5eva to life and supporting us creatively at every turn since the first pitch. And we are endlessly grateful to our partners at NBCU for their boundless commitment,” said Scardino, Fey, Richmond and Carlock in a statement. “Today, we are thrilled to announce that our reunited girl group will be re-reunited at Netflix. We are so thankful to everyone at the streamer who fell in love with our music-filled comedy. We cannot wait to introduce Dawn, Wickie, Summer and Gloria to the global Netflix audience. Well, not fully introduce, if you look closely, Girls5eva can be seen in the background of the Woodstock ’99 documentary setting a porta potty on fire.”
“We are so happy to bring Girls5eva to Netflix,” said Pakosta. “Just like the show, we are so excited to reunite with this amazing team.”
