“Now where to begin…” ponders Enola Holmes at the start of the new trailer for her eponymous film, and the direct-to-camera comments set the tone for Netflix’s Sherlock-adjacent tale.
Based on Nancy Springer’s Edgar Award-nominated book series, The Enola Holmes Mysteries, the film tells the story of Sherlock and Mycroft Holmes’ rebellious teen sister Enola, a gifted super-sleuth in her own right who often outsmarts her brilliant siblings. When her mother mysteriously disappears on her 16th birthday, Enola seeks help from her older brothers. But soon realising they’re less interested in solving the case than in packing her off to finishing school, Enola does the only thing a smart, resourceful and fearless young 1880s woman can do: she runs away to London to find her.
Stranger Things star Millie Bobby Brown plays Enola, with Henry Cavill co-starring as Sherlock and Sam Claflin playing Mycroft Holmes. And now, we’ve got our first glimpse of them in action. The film will premiere on Netflix on 23rd September. Here’s the new video:

First look: Millie Bobby Brown and Henry Cavill in Netflix’s Enola Holmes
25th June 2020
Netflix is expanding the Sherlock Holmes universe this September with new film Enola Holmes, and we’ve got our first look at the impressive cast.
The rest of the cast is no less impressive, including Adeel Akhtar (The Big Sick, Les Miserables), Fiona Shaw (Killing Eve, Harry Potter films), Frances de la Tour (Into the Woods, Harry Potter films), Burn Gorman (Pacific Rim) and Helena Bonham Carter (The Crown).
The film is currently facing a lawsuit from the estate of Arthur Conan Doyle, alleging that the story depicts the iconic sleuth as warm and friendly, character traits that only appear in the final 10 of Doyle’s Holmes stories, published between 1923 and 1927.
A similar claim was lodged against the 2015 film Mr Holmes, starring Ian McKellen, which also presented the character as a human being with emotions – that suit was settled out of court and dismissed within a few months.
Canon Doyle wrote more than 50 stories about Sherlock Holmes, with all of them set to be outside of US copyright protection in 2023.
The script is adapted from Springer’s novels by Jack Thorne (Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, His Dark Materials), and directed by Golden Globe-winner Harry Bradbeer (Fleabag, Killing Eve). Here are the new images:
Netflix picks up Enola Holmes starring Millie Bobby Brown and Henry Cavill
22nd April 2020
Netflix has picked up the rights to the star-studded Enola Holmes.
Caught in the middle of a conspiracy that could alter the course of political history, Enola puts a dynamic new female twist on the world’s greatest detective and his brilliant family.
The book series, which began with The Case of the Missing Marquess in 2006, comprises six books in total. They’re being adapted for the screen by Jack Thorne (Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, His Dark Materials), and directed by Golden Globe-winner Harry Bradbeer (Fleabag, Killing Eve).
That in itself is reason enough to get anyone’s attention, but the project has also assembled an impressive cast list, including Millie Bobby Brown (Godzilla: King of the Monsters, Stranger Things), Sam Claflin (The Hunger Games films, Me Before You), Adeel Akhtar (The Big Sick, Les Miserables), Fiona Shaw (Killing Eve, Harry Potter films), Frances de la Tour (Into the Woods, Harry Potter films), Louis Partridge (Medici), Burn Gorman (Pacific Rim), Susan Wokoma (Crazyhead, Year of the Rabbit), Henry Cavill (Mission: Impossible – Fallout, Man of Steel, The Witcher) and Helena Bonham Carter (The Crown, The King’s Speech, The Wings of the Dove, Harry Potter).
The creative filmmaking team includes BAFTA-nominated director of photography Giles Nuttgens (Hell or High Water), Oscar-nominated production designer Michael Carlin (Collette), editor Adam Bosman (Netflix’s The Crown), and composer Daniel Pemberton (Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse).
The project hails from Legendary Entertainment, with producers including Legendary’s Mary Parent, Alex Garcia and Ali Mendes; Millie Bobby Brown and Paige Brown through their PCMA Productions shingle. Netflix has acquired the global rights to the film, excluding China.
