Netflix may not have won any Oscars at the start of 2020 for The Irishman, but last year was still a strong one for the streaming giant’s increasingly ambitious original film arm, with His House, Uncut Gems, The Trial of the Chicago 7, David Fincher’s Mank and Spike Lee’s Da 5 Bloods all making waves, not to mention Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, which is likely attract awards attention for Chadwick Boseman’s lead performance.

In 2021, Netflix’s line-up is no less star-studded, with films from filmmakers such as Jane Campion (The Power of the Dog), Paolo Sorrentino (The Hand of God) and Adam McKay (Don’t Look Up). Zombies (Army of the Dead), cowboys (The Harder They Fall, Concrete Cowboy), and high school romance (including the culmination of the To All the Boys and The Kissing Booth trilogies) are on the cards, and books such as The Woman in the Window, Munich and The Last Letter from Your Lover are being adapted for the screen. After Extraction’s record success last year, Netflix is also serving up more blockbusters – with Red Notice, Sweet Girl and Kate – and family offerings such as Yes Day, Back to the Outback, Finding ‘Ohana.

Actors set to star in them include Leonardo DiCaprio, Sandra Bullock, Dwayne Johnson, Idris Elba, Meryl Streep, Zendaya, Jennifer Lawrence, Ryan Reynolds, Jennifer Garner, Gal Gadot, Dave Bautista, Naomi Watts, Jake Gyllenhaal, John David Washington and Octavia Spencer. And two actors will also make their directorial debuts: Lin-Manuel Miranda’s tick, tick… Boom! and Halle Berry’s Bruised.

Netflix being Netflix, it’s aiming for quantity as well as quality – and, at a time when studios are delaying films due to the coronavirus pandemic and cinema closures, there’s something to be said for a reliable and guaranteed pipeline of releases. The result is a slate that promises a new film every week. Will they all be classics? It’s far from likely, but they will actually be released when they’re scheduled to, and in 2021, that may well be success enough.
