Netflix nabs UK rights to Shooter TV series
21st October 2016
Netflix has nabbed the UK rights to USA Network’s Shooter TV series.
The show, which is based on Stephen Hunter’s novel, Point of Impact, continues the current trend for turning movies into small-screen outings. Indeed, it is almost 10 years since Mark Wahlberg starred in the 2007 film Shooter.
The programme stars Ryan Philippe as Bob Lee Swagger, an ex-Marine sniper who is recruited back into action to stop a plot to kill the president – only to end up framed for murder. Philippe is a producer on the project, with Wahlberg an exec producer through Closest to the Hole Productions, alongside Stephen Levinson (Ballers) of Leverage Entertainment, and Lorenzo di Bonaventura (Transformers). John Hlavin (The Shield) wrote the pilot and will also exec produce, with Simon Cellan Jones (Bloodline) having directed the pilot.
“Shooter is an uncompromising exploration of the definition and evolution of a hero,” said Jackie de Crinis, Executive Vice President, Original Programming, USA Network.
The show is co-produced by Paramount TV and Universal Cable Productions, marking another high-profile addition to USA Networks’ slate, which already includes the much talked-about Mr. Robot. Paramount’s TV arm was only relaunched in 2014, after the CBS/Viacom split, notes TVWise, with Grease: Live selling to ITV2 earlier in 2016 marking of its first major UK deals in several years. Shooter joins Paramount’s now buzzy TV pipeline, which has a Jack Ryan TV series in the works for Amazon Prime Video, starring John Krasinski.
Netflix, though, has emerged as Paramount’s new partner for Shooter. The streaming giant agreed a deal with Paramount Television, continuing something of a spending spree for Netflix’s UK arm. Indeed, in the last few months, Netflix has snapped up the exclusive rights to CBS’ Star Trek: Discovery, Syfy’s The Expanse, The CW’s Frequency and ABC’s Designated Survivor, the latter of those deals inked within the last few weeks.
As well as Philippe, Shooter also stars Omar Epps (House), Cynthia Addai-Robinson (Arrow), Eddie McClintock (Warehouse 13) and Shantel VanSanten.
Deadline reports that Shooter has a US air date of Tuesday 15th November, which means that the show is likely to premiere on Netflix UK within 24 hours of its broadcast, on Wednesday 16th November. Netflix, however, has not yet made an official announcement confirming the details. Stay tuned for more news very soon.
