“Everything about this is disturbing.” That’s the sound of The Alienist returning to our screens, and a new trailer gives us a glimpse of Season 2.
Set amid the underbelly of New York City’s Gilded Age, the period crime drama follows Laszlo Kreizler (Daniel Brühl), a brilliant and obsessive “Alienist” in the controversial new field of treating mental pathologies, who holds the key to hunting down a never-before-seen ritualistic killer murdering young boys.
A turn-of-the-century murder mystery, it charts the story of the emergence of the world’s most powerful city, which will stop at nothing to bury its darkest secrets. Uncovering them are Luke Evans as newspaper illustrator John Moore and Dakota Fanning’s Sara Howard, an ambitious secretary determined to become the city’s first female police detective.
“This grippingly dark crime drama is dripping with dread,” we wrote in our review of Season 1.
Based on the novel of same name by Caleb Carr, the psychological thriller airs on TNT but debuted exclusively on Netflix in the UK. That was way back in 2018, and now, two years later, it’s finally reared its head once more for a second season.
The Alienist: Angel of Darkness (based on the follow-up novel of the same name) premieres in the US on 26th July. In 2018, Netflix waited until after its weekly Stateside run to release it all-at-once as a box set, which means you can expect Season 2 on our screens around September. Until then, here’s the trailer:
